In Year 3 last week, inspired by our work on ‘Stone Age Boy’, we wrote a setting description of a stone camp and a cave, settings which both featured in the story.

Before we began to write though, we put ourselves into the shoes of the ‘stone age boy’ and worked in pairs to create freeze frames depicting the moment he and his friend ‘Om’ entered the cave. We talked about the possible feelings the characters might experience at this moment and what they might see.

This was a wonderful opportunity to apply our work on expanded noun phrases in the previous lesson into our role plays. Once we had done our freeze frames, we ‘unfroze’ and we played out the roles of our characters telling each other what we could see. We were able to be more descriptive by adding adjectives before the things we could see and we practised adding more information to the noun using the word ‘with’. There were some brilliant ideas such as imaginative ways of describing cave painting, campfires, tools, weapons etc.
