A very excited Year 4 visited the Science Museum in South Kensington to participate in the It Takes Guts Workshop!

After a very busy tube journey to South Kensington, we arrived at the Science Museum. As our workshop was in the afternoon, we took the chance to explore some galleries and learn some more about science. We explored the modern world gallery which showed a timeline of inventions that have improved our world as we know it today. We enjoyed reading all the information and of course playing all of the interactive games!

It was then time for lunch (we were all very hungry by that time) and then we went to line up for our workshop which was titled “It Takes Guts”. The aim of this was to see a practical representation of the human digestive system. Our expert explained how the process starts at our mouth with our teeth before working through various different organs which work together to help digest our food. We learnt that food has various things within it such as fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals as well as carbohydrates. Each step of the process was shown by using a mix of bread, beans, sweetcorn and tinned mandarins (to represent a meal). We saw how at different stages, each organ has it’s own process to help aid digestion and give our bodies the energy it needs. There were also some very interesting videos that were not for the faint hearted. Some of our class were even selected to help out the expert and act out mixing up the food in the stomach!

It was then time to head back to school and reflect on all the interesting things we had seen and experienced during our day!

Thank you to the parent volunteers who supported us on our trip!

Year 4, what was your favourite part of the trip?

I loved the trip it was the best! I was so excited to watch the show, I was really disgusted when the lady showed us the real life versions of the body parts! The long walk was still worth it!
