Our new topic for the Spring Term in Year 4 is Extreme Earth!
In this very exciting topic, we will be learning all about how these natural disasters happen and what we can do to prevent them. The Earth is our home and it is our responsibility to take good care of it. Natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes and flooding are becoming more frequent and more extreme as a result of climate change. These disasters demonstrate the immense power of nature and remind us to always respect and look after the most special of planets.
I would like you to find out more about our Extreme Earth. Use a child-friendly search engine such as Kiddle to answer the following questions as a comment below:
1.) Why do we have weather and how does it happen?
2.) What are some natural disasters that you have heard about or seen?
3.) What would you most like to find out about during this topic?
This topic is going to be extreme-ly fun to learn about!
Mr Garnet
1.) Why do we have weather and how does it happen?
The local weather that impacts our daily lives results from large global patterns in the atmosphere caused by the interactions of solar radiation. Weather is made up of six main components which are temperature, atmospheric pressure, cloud formation, wind, humidity and rain. A small change to any of these conditions can create a different weather pattern.
2.) What are some natural disasters that you have heard about or seen?
I have heard of Typhoons, Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Cyclones, Floods, Tsunamis, Earthquakes, Wildfires, Blizzards, Volcanic Eruptions and Thunderstorms.
3.) What would you most like to find out about during this topic?
I would like to learn what causes natural disasters apart from Climate Change.
1. Why do we have weather and how does it happen?
Weather happens because of how the Earth is tilted, if one side faces the sun then it gets more heat if it faces opposite the sun then it gets less heat. The seasons have different reactions to this weather because if how it’s tilted for example in the summer the Earth’s side of where Britain is found is the most hot because it is facing directly to the sun.
2. What are some natural disasters that you have heard about or seen?
The natural disasters I have heard about are wildfires (currently there’s one in LA, California 🙁 which is very sad), hurricanes ,tsunamis, volcanic eruptions / underwater eruptions, earthquakes, cyclones, hurricanes, extreme heat, landslides, flood, blizzards, and halistorms.
3. What would you most like to find out about during this topic?
I would love to learn on this topic how wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes and underground eruptions happen!
1. Why do we have weather?
Weather happens because different parts of the Earth get different amounts of heat from the Sun.
When it cools, the water in the air can change from a gas to a liquid through condensation. Then the water can fall from the sky as rain or snow.
Sometimes two air masses of different temperatures meet, this is called a warm front or cold front and it will cause rainfall.
2. Some natural disasters are:
tsunamis, tornadoes, strong hail and blizzard, heat wave and wild fire, heavy rain and flooding, volcano eruption, and earthquake.
3. I want to find out about how natural disasters start and how much damage it could do!!! also I would like to know more about tsunamis, damage.
