Today in Year 6, we have been learning more about Catholic Social Teaching through the topic of ‘Peace and Solidarity’.
We started by talking about what the word ‘Peace’ means to us and we all know that peace is an antonym of war. We then learned that there are many other ways to define peace:
Freedom from disturbance – freedom to live your life as you wish
Free from anxiety or distress – being happy and calm
Making peace – forgiving others when they have done things wrong
At peace with the world – to live in a state of harmony with others all around us.
Next, we explored the word ‘Solidarity’ and learned that it means to stand up for each other. If we stand up for and speak out on behalf of those in need in our world, we can make the world a fairer and more peaceful place. Solidarity is fundamental to the way we treat one another. If we truly believe that we are all sisters and brothers, then we must try and help one another just as we would with our own siblings. It is not just about feeling sorry for those who suffer but understanding that we must truly try to help them.
We explored these Bible passages that teach us more about Solidarity and Peace:
‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons and daughters of God.’ (Matthew 5:0)
‘Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but associate with those in need.’ (Romans 12:16)
‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:27)
We discussed how ordinary people like you and me can promote God’s peace in our communities and then we designed posters promoting solidarity and peace.
Can you think of ways that you can be a peacemaker in your everyday life, Year 6?
We can be a peacemaker in our daily life by if there is an old lady crossing the road with bags you help her by getting some bags and bringing it to her house.
I enjoyed doing the poster because it helped me understand how to be a peacemaker.
We learnt that to be a peacemaker is to have peace with the world by loving one another and encouraging them to be more like Jesus.
You can be a peacemaker by trying to resolve an argument between two other people and helping them become friends again.Jesus was a peacemaker because he was always kind to everyone and he always forgave others for their bad actions.
This was a very fun activity to do! We learnt that we can be a peacemaker by helping people when they need our help.
