This week has been a very special week in Year 1 as we have been celebrating the world, our backgrounds and our heritage. Year 1 is an extremely culturally diverse class, we have 30 children from over 20 different countries which is so amazing! This week we took part in a range of different activities to celebrate our brilliant world.
On Monday we kicked off our week with an introduction to World Week, we did this by looking at the different countries we are all from. We used google earth to travel from our school to a range of countries, the children were fascinated to discover that some people are from quite literally the other side of the world! We also looked at a the range of different beautiful flags which represent the countries we come from.
Tuesday was safer internet day and we were lucky to have an excellent assembly led by Miss Carruthers, we were looking at scams and how they can so easily effect us. During the assembly we spoke about the different ways we use the internet. Some of us watch movies on the internet, play games and research things. The children learnt how to spot scams and what to do if they feel they have been targeted by a scammer.
Wednesday was spirituality day, this is a day where we celebrate our faith and look at different important ideas. Again we had an assembly this time led by Miss Walsh and then we took part in a workshop led by our pupil chaplains and we got to make paper chains.
On Thursday we did our first piece of work for World Week, we were looking at being unique. We discovered that nobody is the same as us and we all have similarities and differences. Some similarities that we spotted are that we all go to St Vincent’s and live in London. We also then discovered we have different families, skin colours, eye colours, hair colours and backgrounds. We created our own unique hands, these were hands that we all designed to show off our unique selves. Children drew their flags, their likes, eyes and hair colours.
On Friday we had our amazing cultural day where we all dressed up to show off our heritage. The whole class looked absolutely fabulous and wowed us all with their beautiful outfits. We had our special assembly where so many children performed acts to show off their countries and we took part in a whole school poem. This was a brilliant opportunity to celebrate diversity and be inclusive. Well done Year 1 you were all so great! We finished off our week by creating some acrostic poems based on diversity and by reading some inclusive books.
Well done Year 1 you were so amazing! We hope you have a brilliant half term, see you in a week.
I liked when we were doing a hand because we can use a marker.
