This half term, our science topic is Space!
In our lessons, we have learned about the different planets and the way in which they orbit the Sun. This is called our solar system. We found out that they orbit in an anti-clockwise direction and that the Earth takes 365 and a quarter days to fully orbit the Sun. We also know that the orbit that each planet takes is dependant on how far away it is from the Sun.
More recently, we have learned about the Sun, the Earth and the Moon. In this lesson, we learned that the Sun is made up of hydrogen and helium! Our learning objective was to understand the shape of each of these bodies, which are mainly spherical. This said, we found out that the Earth is actually slightly irregular and that due to the force of gravity and its rotation, it’s actually a little squashed at the poles. We also spoke about the craters and mountains on the moon the fact that these are created after an asteroid, meteoroid, or comet collides with the Moon. We even spoke about the history of the knowledge of the shape of the Earth, dating back to Aristotle. We know that throughout time, people have denied the shape of the Earth and may claim that it’s flat! We know that we can bust these myths with proof such as satellite images, plane travel and gravity too. We created our own fact-file for the Sun, Earth and Moon to summarise our new knowledge and understanding. We also used the class iPads to research any other interesting facts, such as the fact that the Earth spins at about 1,670 km/h!
Today, we went to visit the Science Museum! After a long wait at the bus stop, we dashed through the museum to be able to go and eat our lunch. We were excited to go to our Mission to Space show, where we were able to discover our solar system and the world of space exploration. We learned about how ideas about space have changed throughout history and some of the mysteries that have been solved.
We were told at the start of the show to expect two very loud bangs during the live demonstrations, and our Explainer—an astrophysicist himself—certainly wasn’t exaggerating! During the demonstrations, we explored how stars can explode, how the Sun and Earth move and rotate to create night and day, and how long it takes for the speed of light to travel from a distant star to us. We also discovered the importance of oxygen (and what would happen to Mr Potato Head if he went into space… it wasn’t pretty) and learned how rockets have been designed and developed over time.
After this, we had a little bit of time to walk around the Space Gallery and see lots of fascinating artefacts! We didn’t have too long here to be able to find out lots of information so a few of us would love to go back!
What was your favourite part of our trip today and what would you like to find out about space?
Thank you miss Forster Adams and miss Lee for letting us go to the science museum I really appreciate it and I loved the show and the walking around since you could discover lots of new things!
It was so fun!
The workshop was really fun and loud! It taught me so much about the discoveries like how the world is not flat and the sun doesn’t orbit the earth.
It was so exciting and I love looking around.
it was so fun thanks for letting us go
thank you miss Forster Adams and miss lee for letting us go on this really fun trip we all
learn new stuff
It was a really great trip. I learned so much more about space. Thank you Miss Forster Adams , Miss Lee & the parents.
our trip to the museum was so much fun.
I liked it because we got to see a toy story star. Mr Potato Head and Mrs Potato Head!!!
The trip was SOOOO fun!! When the ball changed to the moon, we would each take turns to be Gru and say “Minions! Tonight, we shall steal, THE MOON!!!!” The others were the minions and they said “YAAAAY!!” It was really funny, and we all laughed! The workshop was also fun. We blew up the ‘Sun’ (a yellow balloon with helium inside) and it was very loud and hot!!! Thank you to Miss Lee and Miss Forster Adams!
P.S:
Miss Carruthers couldn’t come and I was so sad!!
It was amazing, I learned so much. We loved science museum trip, I hope we visit it again
thanks Miss Lee and Miss Forster Adams.
I loved it specially the workshop
Thank you Miss Forster Adams, Miss Lee and Miss Coleman for arranging this trip .I really enjoyed it and we learned a lot about space and the rotations .
thanks so much
I loved the trip thank you so much.
Thank you to everyone who came with us. It was so fun, I loved it
It was good to go to the science museum.
