To help give us ideas for our landscape painting in Art in Year 3, this week, we visited the October Gallery for an excellent workshop.
We began by looking at paintings in the exhibition matching small sections each of us were given on paper with the paintings they were copies of. This helped us to look closely at each painting. We then had a think about what we liked about each painting and we were able to place a gold slip of paper next to our favourite painting. We did the same thing with a silver slip for paintings we liked the least. Each time we had to think about why we liked some paintings and disliked others. Was it the colours? Was it the way it made us feel? Was it the content?
The next exercise involved drawing patterns and shapes without taking the pencil off the page, without looking and without using our favoured hand. This was to help us feel free from over thinking and allowing our instincts to take control of the work we were creating. Afterwards, it was time to work collaboratively and a long roll of paper was stretched across the floor. We had a range of pastels and crayons at our disposal and with each person allocated a small section of the roll, we created a class work of Art, once again without the restrictions of rules and boundaries.
Once we had moved to the tables, we were given the opportunity to use acrylic paint to explore using paint brushes, combining colours and adding different tools to create patterns and shapes within the paint. We finished off our fantastic workshop by having our lunch in the gallery’s lovely courtyard. We extend our thanks to the organisers and workshop leaders at the October Gallery for an excellent morning!
