Recently, in our art lessons we have explored the landscapes of North and South America by creating their own fold-out pop-up biomes. We began by sticking together out paper so that it was ready for use, and we had to carefully cut it to create our future foreground, middle-ground and background pieces. We then looked at a range of images of biomes that we’ve become more familiar with during our geography topic. We looked at some of the key features within them such as mountains, rivers, and the vegetation. Once we decided which biome we wanted to focus on, we sketched own designs, focusing on how we’d incorporate the important features in the foreground, middle ground, and background to create depth.

Using an accordion-fold technique, we built 3D landscapes, carefully layering pop-up elements to bring own scenes to life. To add texture, we experimented with different materials such as scrunched paper for bushes and we tried to use different paper for pop animals, using folds. This hands-on approach helped us to think about how we can use both visual and tactile techniques in artwork.

The final pieces were fantastic, showing a great understanding of depth, perspective, and the rich diversity of North and South American biomes!
