On Fridays we have our music lessons with Mr Rees which we all really enjoy! Hopefully it won’t be too long until we can join in with them again.
Today I want you to listen to two different musical pieces from this website–
Listen to:
-
Edvard Grieg In the Hall of the Mountain King from ‘Peer Gynt’
-
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky The Nutcracker – Waltz of the Flowers
When listening to each piece of music I want you to
-
Just listen and enjoy the music that you hear.
-
Listen to it again and see if you can hear different instruments playing. Can you name the instruments? Write them down in a list.
-
Tell me which piece of music you liked best and why?
Here are some pictures of some instruments to help you name them:
There are lots of different pieces of music on the website so have a listen to some more if you want!
Have a look on Busy Things too because they have some excellent Music games! You can even make your own music!
Hello Miss Travers,
I loved the two pieces but my favorite one was the one from Edvard Grieg because I felt a lot of different feelings. Also at the beginning it was very slow and then it was faster and faster and the end all instruments were playing all together making a very loud music.
I recognised:
violin
cello
double bass
French horn
trumpet
trombone
harp
clarinet
oboe
recorder
tranverse flute
drums
cymbal
I loved this music activity!!!
Well done, you have found lots of instruments!
During this clip, I could hear a few instruments such as the trombone, the trumpet, the clarinet, the violin, the tambour, the cello, the double bass, the french horn, and drums.
The piece I liked the most was the end when the big drum sounds loud. It seems that this instrument was leading all of them
That’s great Junior, well done!
I hope you enjoyed the activity!
Good Morning Miss Travers.
My favourite piece of music out of Edvard Grieg In the Hall of the Mountain King from ‘Peer Gynt’ and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky The Nutcracker – Waltz of the Flowers is “In The Hall Of The Mountain.
I liked this piece of music better because it made feel really excited and I wanted to dance all over the room. It made me imagine that I was running to a really special place like a magical mountain and I could climb to the top make snow men.
In Waltz Of The Flowers I heard these instruments.
Violins
French horns
Harp
Double bass
Cello.
In The Hall Of The Mountain King I heard these instruments.

Trumpet
Drums
Violins
Flute
The clarinet

Good morning Miss Travers, my favourite music was the Nutcracker one because Nutcracker is my favourite ballet. I recently watched the entire ballet with my sister and I loved it. When I close my eyes and listen to this music, I can see myself dressed as a princess dancing a waltz with a prince. I could hear the following instruments: harp, clarinet, drums, French horn, double bass, violin, triangle, piano, trombone and tambourine.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
I also love the Nutcracker ballet! I saw it at Christmas time at the London Coliseum, it was brilliant!
Hello Miss Travers,
I loved both pieces of music, but my favourite was The Nutcracker Waltz of the Flowers.
Parts of it made me march around the kitchen! It made me feel happy, it sounded very graceful, magical, elegant, peaceful and beautiful. I loved when the sweets danced as it got so fast and loud!
The Nutcracker book is one of my favourite Christmas books.
I heard trumpet, drum, harp, violin, clarinet, double bass, triangle and french horn.
Well done! You have named lots of instruments! I’m glad you liked the music! I liked it too!

I liked the the tow musics, but I preferred waltz of the flowers because I liked doing the moves and it was very warm and very peaceful, I also liked the story of the nutcracker.
Glad you enjoyed it! I like the story too!
The mountain troll: At the beginning the music sounds like someone tiptoeing around. I imagine that there’s someone trying to get out of the cave of the troll without getting spotted. Then the music gets very fast and loud as if the troll wakes up and chases the person.
I saw bassoons, double basses, cellos, French horns and then for the higher tones there were oboes, flutes and violins ? and big big drums.
Super work, I think that too! I think it is slow at the beginning because someone is trying to escape before the troll sees them!
I could hear trumpets flute clarinette horn violin cello drums harp and bass.
My favourite one was The Nutcracker song because it makes me happy and want to dance. I went to the musical it reminded me of it. I also love the story, we read it a lot with my nanny before I go to sleep.

The nutcracker – Waltz of the flowers
The music starts with harp, oboes and French horns and then, after a solo of the harp, the waltz begins. I also saw clarinets, bassoons, violins, violas, double basses, flutes and cellos, big drums, triangles and trumpets.
I liked both pieces and couldn’t decide which one was the best – the mountain troll piece is very exciting and energetic while the waltz is just so beautiful and flowing.
Well done Laura! You have named lots of instruments!
I like both pieces too! They are both very different.
