Good morning Class 4!
Well done for all of your hard work yesterday you are all doing brilliantly!
I know it is hard to learn online but hopefully we will all be back at school soon!
Today in English we are going to do a grammar activity which you can hopefully use in your longer writing later this week!
Our focus today is metaphors and similes.
What are they?
Is there a difference?
Look at the link below:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zfkk7ty/articles/z9tkxfr
A metaphor is a word or phrase used to describe something as if it were something else.
For example, ‘A wave of terror.’
The terror isn’t actually a wave but a wave is a good way of describing something.
A simile describes something by comparing it to something else, using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’.
For example, ‘As busy as a bee.’
Have a look at this poem which was suggested by the Primary Shakespeare Company. It is about a storm and was written by Alexander Rakic:
Storm at Sea
In the great old storm the thunder goes bang bang bang!
It is like a beating drum,
It is as loud as a firing gun at the start of a race,
It is an enormous earthquake,
The thunder is furious at the world.
Bang bang bang!
In the great old storm the wind goes whoosh whoosh whoosh!
It is like a howling wolf,
It is as cold as ice from the Arctic,
It is a wild whistle blowing high and low,
The wind is singing a deadly song.
Whoosh whoosh whoosh!
In the great old storm the waves go crash crash crash!
They are as tall as towering buildings in a city,
They are like fists pounding the surface,
They are blue bulldozers of the sea,
The waves are waving sailors goodbye to Davy Jones’ Locker.
Crash crash crash!
TASK 1:
Can you find any metaphors or similes in the poem?
Can you challenge yourself and even find one of each? Or more?
TASK 2:
Next, have a go at writing your own metaphors and similes.
Can you write some about a storm, like the one that Prospero created?
I can’t wait to read your ideas!
Be as imaginative as you can!

Great work Albert!
‘the wind singing a deadly song’ is a great phrase but it is not a simile or a metaphor. It is personification – another great technique to use in our writing!
I like your simile about the bacon (I might have to make myself a bacon sandwich now)!
Can you think of any similes or metaphors about a storm?
The thunder went like a beating drum.
The thunder sounded like a war of guns!
In the great old city the wentwoosh like a vacuum cleaner.
The tower is big as a surface.

The bike whined

Great, can you tell me one metaphor and one simile from the poem?
Also ‘The trees whispered.’ and ‘The bike whined.’ are great sentences but they are not metaphors of similes, they are personification, which is another great technique to use.
Can you write a metaphor or simile about a storm?
The pear was as heavy as a rock.
The building was as big as a mountain.
The paper was as flexible as tissue.

The waves are waving goodbye.
This is personification (another great writing technique).
Your own metaphors and similes are great! I look forward to seeing them on your writing later this week!
I found 6 similes and 6 metaphors

The waves were waving.
The lights were blinking.
The stars were flashing.
The cars were beeping.
Some great phrases Ciana! Just check if these are similes and metaphors.
For example, the waves were waving is personification (because waves are not people they can not actually wave but it is a good way of describing them).

Task 1
yes, and I spotted a pattern on each paragraph,

Task 2
1. The waves roared to the surface.
2. The lightning was like zeus’ sceptre
3.The wind was a mighty hurricane .
Very observant well done Emilie!
For your own sentences, the first one is more like personification, which is.still a great writing technique!
Also, the wind was a mighty hurricane is a great phrase but remember a hurricane is strong winds so I’m not sure if it can be classed as a metaphor.
Think about describing the wind as something completely different, like ‘the wind was a galloping horse.’
Emailed the task. The metaphors are harder to come up with.
Great thank you!
Yes metaphors are a bit more challenging! See if you can think of any more before Thursday when you’ll be doing some more writing!
