Today we are looking at solving word problems using multiplication and division again. Solving word problems helps us to apply what we have learnt to ‘real-life’ problems.
Let’s look at the example question below:
First of all we need to find out how many doughnuts are there altogether.
There are 3 boxes with 12 doughnuts in each.
3 X 12 = 36
Now it says that Charles wants to repack the doughnuts into packages of 4 doughnuts each. So how many boxes will he have?
We need to do 36 ÷ 4 = 9
So the answer is 9.
Let’s look at one more example together:
First of all, we need to work out how many toy soldiers Holly had to begin with. If she could make 7 rows of 11 soldiers we need to do
7 X 11 = 77
However, she has lost 14 soldiers.
77 – 14 = 63
Holly now has 63 soldiers. Can she still form 7 rows?
63 ÷ 7 = 9 so yes she can because 63 can be divided evenly by 7.
Her soldiers will look like this:
Now try the worksheets and maybe the challenge mentioned at the top of the page.
Please ask if you have any questions! Good luck and enjoy!

Hi, Miss Lee and Class 4,
Miss Lee, I have completed all the math no problem sheets!
Hope we can see each other again!????
Great! I hope we are all back at school soon so that we can all see each other again too!
Dear Miss Lee.
All done. Have a great weekend!!
Good work, thank you! I hope you have a lovely weekend too!
I have checked the answer with my mum – we could not find a rule to follow to solve it and I guess it could be done just with guesses?
Sometimes maths questions can only be solved through what is called ‘trial and error’ where you try different methods, using your answer from your previous attempt to change your next choice of method.
In this challenge question, you need to use your knowledge of the 8 times tables to help you.
Well done for sticking at it to find the answer!
Hello Miss Lee!
I just got my book yesterday and seems like I’ve already done these pages in my book ?. And also, yes I have checked on if it was correct and it was. I have practiced these pages and I’m good to go!
