Hello Class 4!
As this is our final day learning about The Tempest, I thought you would enjoy a fun art activity to complete our Shakespeare project!
As you know, ‘The Tempest’ is a play which has been performed in theatres around the world. There are many things in the theatre which help bring a play to life from the actors to the scenery, the lighting, music, sound effects and the costumes! Today we are going to be looking at costume design!
David Walker – Costume Designer
David Walker (1934–2008) was a prominent English theatre designer, perhaps most celebrated for his work in ballet. For The Royal Ballet he created designs for Frederick Ashton’s The Dream (1964, costumes; 1986, costumes and sets) and Cinderella (1965, costumes; 1987, costumes and sets), The Sleeping Beauty (1977) and Konservatoriet (1982). He also worked extensively in opera, and for Covent Garden Opera Company (later The Royal Opera). Walker also worked in film and television, where his credits included Hamlet (1971, Emmy Award), another Shakespeare play. Some of his work can be seen at the V&A Museum in London. See some pictures of his work below:
(Click the image to enlarge it.)
If you look closely at David Walker’s design sketches (the top two pictures) he uses lines and various shapes to add details to his designs. He then uses tones and colour to show what types of fabrics may be used to bring his designs to life.
Watch this short video clip about costume design:
(You don’t need to watch the part about the challenge near the end as we are doing a slightly different task.)
Remember to ask an adult before clicking the video link.

Your task today is to design a costume for one of the characters from The Tempest. You need to organise line, tone, shape and colour to represent your chosen character and to create your costume design. Think about the different characters and what different colours might represent. Ariel is a magical sprite. How can you show this through a costume? Perhaps long flowing sleeve with beading which which shimmer in the stage lights and make it look like he is glittering? What about King Alonso who could be seen as the villain of the play after he plots to kill his brother? He probably would not be wearing calm pastel colours! Maybe darker colours or a bold red to hint that he may be evil?
If you need some inspiration, have a look at some costume designs for characters from the play by other designers…
Try to think really carefully about your costume design and take your time to sketch it as neatly as possible. When you are happy with your final design, send in a photo of your work and I will create a gallery on this blog of all of our designs!

Hello Holly! I am well thank you , how are you?
I am looking forward to seeing your final masterpiece!
Missing you all too!
I will send a picture ?️
I look forward to seeing it!
Are we sketching it?
Yes sketch it first and then add little splashes of colour to show what colour it will be. For example if you drew a cape you might colour just the corner or the edge of it red. Or if you prefer, colour the whole thing, but don’t forget to label it too!
Good afternoon miss Lee.
How are you (and everyone else in the class)?
I love art and this is especially fun. In addition we learn so many facts. Now I can imagine how the play ‘the Tempest’ could have really looked like because I know the story and the costumes.
I have really adored this section and I am sure it will inspire me to do things. Actually it has already inspired me to design clothes. By the way I can not find mindful Monday to say something about y life at home. Fortunately I prefer school ? for learning.
I hope we can all see each other soon.
I really miss all of you as start getting bored of talking to the iPad.
(I don’t say hello how are you iPad though; I should The I say that)

This morning I had a video meeting with all of the teachers but it wasn’t the same as being all together at school.
I know doing everything online can get tiring you everyone is doing a great job! I will try to make sure the blogs are as exciting as possible so that you don’t get bored of them!
Do we have to colour it in
You don’t have to do the whole thing in colour, you could just add a tiny bit of colour if you prefer. For example the corner of a coat just to show which colour it may be so that you can show the costume reflects the character that is wearing it.
Ok I will send it in
Great I can’t wait to see! How was football practise?
