Hello Class 4!

I really loved seeing you all on our zoom call yesterday! I hope you enjoyed it too!
I had a big smile on my face for the rest of the day!
A big thank you for all of your hard work and wonderfully polite comments on the blogs.
I am so proud of you all!

Today we are going to do some art (I am sure lots of you will be excited about this)!

As we have been look at the Tudor times in Great Britain let’s begin there today…
In Tudor times artists were employed by the Kings and Queens and their courtiers to create portraits of them, they are known as Artists of the Tudor Court. The portraits helped show there wealth and royal status.
What is a portrait?
*Portraits are drawings, paintings or photographs of a person’s face and expression.
*In the Tudor period portraits were very popular amongst the noble families.
*Having your portrait painted was a sign of nobility and wealth.

Let’s look at some Tudor portraits…

Task 1:
On the blog, write about both portraits.
What colours have been used?
What do you notice about the expressions in both pictures?
What is the same and what is different in these two pictures?

Task 2:
Have a go at drawing your own portrait.
Watch this useful video but remember to always as an adult before clicking on a web link!
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/art-and-design-draw-self-portrait/z6ytscw

You can use pencil, paint, pastels anything to complete your portrait but try to spend time on it to get the lighting and textures right (this is all explained in the video link).
When you have completed your portrait, send in a photo of it! I will create a Class 4 Art Gallery on this blog of everyone’s portraits so make sure you check back this afternoon to see everyone’s work. I wonder if people will be able to guess who’s portrait is who?

I can’t wait to see your masterpieces!
Missing you all lots!
From Miss Lee 🙂

  1. 1) Well they they have used silver and creamy brown, and also have used some blue and green.

    2) In both portriates they are kind of smileing but trying to keep there face stright.

    3) well the thing that they have in commen is that
they are in there finest clothes. the thing that they do not have in commen is there backround.

  2. Hello Ella,
It was lovely to see you in the zoom call yesterday, I hope you enjoyed it!
Well done for answering the questions for task 1! What if different about the background in the pictures?

  3. Nina *?? says:

    Hello Miss Lee

on the first portrait the background its blue like the sky in the second picture the background brown and has a few paintings

the expression on each person face is extremely similar except that the 2 one is smiling a tiny bit and the first 1 has its lips strait

the things that our the same is that they both have
a necklace and a ring there clothes our both puffy at the wrist

  4. Well done for completing task 1 Nina!
    Good observations!

  5. I drew the portrait.

  6. Fantastic!
Can you send in a photo of it?
    Also, try task 1!

  7. hello miss lee,

in the portraites they are not smiling because queen Elizabeth the 1st made a rule that no one was aloud to smile in pictures.

  8. Hello Holly! 🙂
Yes well done, smiling in a portrait was often seen as ‘informal.’ Also, Queen Elizabeth I did not travel so she used portraits to show herself to her people. She therefore wanted to have portraits that would impress her subjects and needed to look more serious in these.

  9. TASK 1
The colours used was usually white because white was the colour of silk and back in the olden days silk was very expensive, silk came from a silk worm or spider either. The expression on the portraits face well doesn’t look happy or maybe serious. The different of the portraits was they were boy and girl. The same of the portraits is that they both wear lots of silk.

  10. Some good observations Albert!
Yes silk would have been very expensive. Rich Tudors embroidered their clothes with silk and sometimes gold and silver thread!

  12. Hi Miss Lee,
Here are my answer to the question.

    What colours have been used?
In the first picture the background was a dark blue and in the second picture the background was a green and some brown as well as some picture.
What do you notice about the expressions in both pictures?
I notice that in the first one he is not smiling at all but in the second one she is smiling a tinny bit.
What is the same and what is different in these two pictures?
what the same is in both pictures is that they are both wearing fancy clothes. But the difference is that the man has a fancy hat on but the women has got hers next to her.

    Thanks, Tijne

  13. Hello Tijne!
Well done, I can tell you have looked at the portraits carefully and thought about them in detail!
    Great work!

  14. T1
The portraits are some portraits of king Henry VIII and one of his wife’s. There are a varian of colours. They are smiling.
    T2

  15. Well done for recognising King Henry VIII
The other portrait is of Queen Elizabeth I (the daughter of King Henry VIII)
Can you think about what is in the background of the portraits and maybe their choice of clothes for the portrait. Why did they want to look rich and important?

  16. Paolo ??? says:

These portraits show two very important persons in Tudor times: Henry VIII and Elisabeth I. They are depicted very richly, to show their power and wealth. I am quite impressed by Elisabeth I because the portrait depicts many things and especially jewels. These are images of power and fear. Portraits were very important before photography was invented.
The artists used a lot of colours especially peach.

  17. Well done Paolo, you have looked and thought carefully about these portraits!
I am impressed with your detail sentences and knowledge of portraits!
People often had things important to them shown in their portraits. For example to show they are strong they may have had a sword. To show they are knowledgeable they might have some books and to show they have travelled they might have had a globe.
Will you include anything in the background of your portrait?

  18. In the background there is dark blue. In the other pictures background there are dark green curtains and a few paintings.

In the first picture the man has straight lips. In the second picture she is smiling a bit.

The same thing is they both have rings and necklaces.
The difference is she has a crown and the man has a fancy hat. In the second picture she has a bunch of bows and the man does not.

  19. Miss Lee says:

Well done Ajay, you have looked carefully at the portraits!
Why do you think both people in the portraits had rings and necklaces?

  20. In both pictures they have used dark colours and their faces don’t look very happy. In one there is a woman and the other is a man and he only show’s his head and and chest.

  21. Miss Lee says:

    Well done Rafael!
Will you be composing your own portrait?

  22. I finished

  23. Miss Lee says:

Great I can’t wait to see your portrait!

  24. Paolo ??? says:

Hello Miss Lee – I have just sent you my portrait. It has Lego in it…

  25. Miss Lee says:

I have just seen it thank you!
The gallery is almost ready to open!

  26. The colours that have been used are brown, green, red and some silver.
What I have noticed about the expressions in the two pictures is that they are both looking very serious .
What is the same in both pictures is that they are dressed in nice clothes and jewellery. What is different about the two pictures is that Henry VIII’s picture there is a plain back-round and in Elizabeth I’s there is not.

  27. Miss Lee says:

    Wonderful observations Clara!
Why do you think both people are wearing nice clothes in the portraits?
Thank you for sending in your own portrait!

  28. In the first portrait the painter has used very light colors. Though n the second portrait it has a darker pitch.
In the first portrait the background is a blank portrait. It (it is only of one color; dark blue. However in the second portrait it is detailed (there is a background full of objects like the crown, the paintings, the curtains and the shelf.

They have a really important look and they seem as if respected. In both portraits the person looks serious. I know this as their mouth is a one-hundred and eighty degree angle and the look of there eyes are serious. They are also both very important. These people are really wealthy. I know this because I can see that on both paintings the painter has included jewelry. They are also wearing silk, rich clothes which represents that they have a lot of money.

In both paintings the painter has used complicated patterns, so they probably used a very fin brush. The first painting has a flowery, roots kind of patterns and a wavy one at the edges of the shirt.
On the second painting the person is also wearing a flowery kind of pattern on the sleeves and a black back round decorated with lovely pink bows.
All of these paintings are WONDERFUL!!!

I love both Tudor portraits, and I hope you will like mine to.
I will send it to you in no time.
By the way, I think this was really fun and it is a wonderful way of learning about important people and portraits from Tudor times
Thank you very much miss Lee ❤️❤️❤️

  29. Miss Lee says:

    Hello Stella!
I am so impressed with your incredibly detailed observations!
Thank you for putting so much time into the task and for working so hard!
Well noticed that both people have ‘an important look and seem respected’ as they are a Tudor King and Queen!
Portraits were used to show just how wealthy and important they really were!
I am glad you have enjoyed this task, thank you Stella 🙂

  30. Hello Miss Lee,

    Task 1
They have used dark colours like brown, red and grey. I have noticed that the expression on the peoples face ( Henry VIII and Elisabeth I)
are very serious. The difference is that Henry VIII has a hat and Elisabeth I has pictures around her.

  31. Miss Lee says:

Well done for looking closely at the portraits Mayowa!
Thank you for sending in your portrait!

  32. 1.) On the first painting, the background is navy-ish blue, followed by colours of cream, brown, white and silver! Also, the expression of the faces seem like they don’t smile, but at the same time elegant, and straight.
2.) On the second painting, it shows that the background like in a lounge area, with the colours of bronze, dark grass green and yellow. The expression is similar to the first painting, which I said elegant, straight and a serious face.
    Did you know?
Tudor ladies often carried a sweet purse, in which they carry rose petals, or dried lavender and spices.
I am going to send my portrait to you through email. Thank you ?!

  33. Miss Lee says:

Will you be creating your own portrait?

  39. Miss Lee says:

I wonder if anyone can guess who each portrait is of?

  40. Did anyone send their portraits?

  41. Miss Lee says:

Hello Stella, yes they did look at the gallery at the bottom of today’s task!

  42. Can we do a self portrait or do we have to do someone from the Tudor times???

  43. Miss Lee says:

Hi Stella, the task is to do a self portrait so a portrait of yourself. Then I will add a background and a special frame for you like I have done to the other portraits!

  44. In both pictures, they have used dark colours and their faces don’t look very happy. In one there is a woman and the other is a man and he only show’s his head and chest.

  45. What else do you notice about the pictures Raimundo?

  46. I also see they are wearing, like pretty royal clothes.

  47. hi miss
can you draw yourself as a manga or anime?

  48. If you want to draw in that style as an extra you can and I could share it on the Mindful Monday blog!
