Good Morning Year 2!

Click here for a printable version of this blog post: Thursday DT printable

Today we’re going to be designing something very exciting!

As she is the Queen, Queen Elizabeth II has many special homes around the UK. She has to have a place to stay wherever she visits and so has homes in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.  Some are in the capital cities (London and Edinburgh) and some are in the countryside.

Have a look at all her palaces:

Balmoral Castle

Buckingham Palace

Hillsborough Castle

Holyrood Palace

Sandringham Estate

Windsor Castle

But, you’ll notice that she doesn’t have one in Wales (Miss Jones would be so upset!) and so today I would like you to design a new palace for the Queen.

Your palace must:

  • Be very large – she often has lots of people staying with her and hosts big events
  • Be surrounded by beautiful gardens – she loves nature
  • Have some tall towers – it is a palace after all!
  • Have a flag pole – the flag goes up whenever she comes to stay!

Make sure you use a ruler when drawing straight lines in your design, the Queen wouldn’t want wonky walls!

Send in a photo of your design and then you can write on the blog why you chose to design it in this way.

  1. I chose to make a Palace for the Queen in Minecraft. It has a long red carpet because she is the Queen and I put lots of flowers and grass outside. It has a glass roof so the Queen can look up at the sky and stars.

  2. Miss Carruthers says:

What a creative way to show your palace Jack! Well done 🙂 I think she’ll love looking up at the sky and the stars. The red carpet is very appropriate as she is so important 🙂

  3. We sent our photo. We had fun.

  4. Miss Carruthers says:

What a great palace Finley! I’m very impressed with how straight your lines are, it must have been fiddly to do when drawing the crenellations at the top of the palace!

  5. there are 36 windows and 1 sky light.

  6. Miss Carruthers says:

The queen is going to love looking out at her beautiful gardens through all those windows! 🙂 Well done Joshua!

  7. I hath a castle.

  8. Miss Carruthers says:

Is hath a typo, or you speaking like a medieval soldier?! 🙂

  9. I hath a castle at home which helped me.

  10. Yes I am 🙂

  11. Miss Carruthers says:

I thought you might be 🙂

  12. Hi Miss

My castle was built with coloured bricks that make the Union Flag on the front!

Can you see the queen looking out from her bedroom window?

    Albert

  13. Miss Carruthers says:

What a creative way to combine the flag and the Queen’s palace! She looks very proud of her home as she waves out the window 🙂 Great job!

  14. Marisa (●'◡'●) says:

    Hello Miss
I have done my work and my mum is going to send a picture of the castle.

  15. Miss Carruthers says:

It’s wonderful Marisa! You’ve taken so much care to colour it neatly. I love all the roses in the garden, I’m sure the Queen would love them too 🙂

  16. I designed my castle with a drawbridge and all the defenses. I have a book about castles with lots of lift it flaps. I called it Cyril’s castle after my toy sloth.

  17. Miss Carruthers says:

It was very professional of you to include a ‘bird’s eye view’ of the castle and to include so many labels. It looks wonderful, I’m sure she will love it 🙂

  18. Sophia P says:

Dear Miss Carruthers, I send a picture of my castle. My castle is in a hill and has a moat. The Queen’s friend live in the moat: a goldfish and a starfish. At the bottom if the picture us a fence to protect the Queen. I loved this homework.
    Greetings,
    Sophia

  19. Miss Carruthers says:

What beautiful work Sophia! ⭐ I can tell that you loved this homework because you have taken great care over it! Very thoughtful of you to include a fence to keep the Queen safe 🙂

  20. I have done my castle Miss. I tried to make it look royal. Can you see the Queen at the window? I have put the Union Jack on the castle.

  21. Miss Carruthers says:

Wonderful Rafael! I love how neatly you coloured it and how green you made the grass 🙂

  22. I have drawn a picture of a castle for the queen. It has turrets and a flag, and a balcony for the queen to stand on. There are five floors, including the servants’ bedrooms in the room. There are 25 bedrooms altogether. I have also started designing the garden, including a water fountain, maze and lots of flower beds.

  23. Miss Carruthers says:

I forgot about the balcony – what an important feature of her palace! Where else would she be able to wave at everyone from!

  24. Dear Miss Carruthers,
Today I made my own castle for HM out of cardboard.?
I made a figure of the Queen out cardboard, too. ?
    I enjoyed it.

  25. Miss Carruthers says:

Amazing Klara! What a beautiful palace and I love her fountain in the garden. I’m sure the Queen will love living there 🙂

  26. Catherine says:

    Dear Miss Carruthers,
    I’ve uploaded my castle design.

  27. Miss Carruthers says:

A brilliant palace Catherine! I love the dome at the top and her beautiful flowers in the garden. 🙂

  28. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done Layla! I love all the different flags in her palace and her beautiful curtains 🙂

  29. Miss Carruthers says:

Madeleine, what a wonderful palace! Such a creative way to make the trees in her garden and I love that the Queen and Prince Philip are out enjoying the gardens 🙂 Well done!

  30. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done Sophia B! I love all the windows you included, and very clever to have a car park so that everyone can park their cars safely 🙂
