A dash can show a break in a sentence that is longer, or more important than a break made by a comma.
Example: The fire spread so quickly – I was scared.
Dashes are used to separate a word or phrase that has been added to a sentence as an explanation or afterthought. The word or phrase inside the dashes is called a parenthesis.
Example: I looked up – not at the sun of course – and saw my brother’s plane heading for Australia.
Can you write a super sentence with a dash?
Please proof-read your response before submitting (check punctuation, spelling and grammar).
We look forward to reading your responses,

Good morning Yr 5
It was so nice to read all of your comments yesterday – I’m looking forward to reading some more today.
As I sit at my desk – I can smell the beautiful scent of the Lilly flowers – my daughter brought me for mothers day.
Good morning Mrs Avdiu and Ms Robertson
1* The fire in Australia is spreading so fast – Australian people and animals are frightened .
2* I was looking at the dancing grass -not at the old ,slow , slimy and disgusting earthworm – , but at the colorful and delicate butterfly on the flower .
I like the way you used a dash to separate an afterthought in the first sentence. Please review your second sentence to ensure it makes sense. There is a comma after a dash and the sentence as a whole does not make sense grammatically. I wonder if your classmates could suggest a revised version?
Good moring Mrs Avdiu and Ms Robertson! I was reading about the dash and a sentence that I thought of with a dash is “Cheese and onion crisps – come in packs of twelve – and are my favourite flavour of crisps” and I also thought of “Lulu went out into the garden-even though she was told not to- and got very muddy.”I hope you’re having a great day!
Excellent!
Thank you for sharing some fantastic sentences Elsa. A little tip… Please ensure that ‘I’ is always capitalised (instead of ‘i’). I’ve corrected this for you in nearly all comments on various blogs but please check this before posting in future blogposts! 🙂
Good afternoon!I hope you all had a wonderful day so far. For the grammar task today, I have decided to write five sentences with dashes.
1. John was afraid of two things- spiders and beetles.
2. It started pouring with rain – I was so annoyed.
3. I want to stay fit and healthy – that’s why I exercise everyday.
4. Sophia gave me a terrible haircut – I was furious.
5. At the age of six – Abby learnt how to do a cartwheel.
