Inverted Commas
Inverted commas show when someone is speaking.
They are also called speech marks.
Inverted commas go at the start and end of the speech.
”I’d like a cake,” said Matthew.
There’s always a punctuation mark before the final speech marks.
Task
First we will practise using inverted commas correctly. Add the inverted commas in the correct places to punctuate the sentences below.
1. Can you give me some advice? asked Dylan.
2. Are you posting that letter? asked David.
3. There’s a hole in my shoe! said Kirsty.
4. Let’s go and play in the snow, said Alison.
Now have a go at writing your own sentences using inverted commas. You may like to write a paragraph about an event that happened with two people. Post your answers on the blog.
Remember to check over your writing to make sure all of the punctuation is there!
Good luck!
