Good morning Year 5!

Today we will look at homes in the UK and you will be designing and making one!

Many people in the United Kingdom (UK) live in houses, which they either own or rent. There are many different types of houses in the UK. The most common are detached (not joined to another house), semi detached (attached to another house), terraced (long streets where all the houses are joined together) and flats/apartments.

Old buildings

There are many very old buildings and houses in the UK. They can be rather higgledy piggledy, with very low or very high ceilings, narrow staircases and funny roofs made out of straw thatch, tiles or stone. Walls might be made out of local stone or even mud.

Some buildings are ‘listed’ which mean they are a bit out of the ordinary, in a historical or architectural way. If the owners of these properties want to change the structure, special permission needs to be granted. Have a look at some listed UK homes here.

Devizes Castle

Tower Blocks

So many people live in UK cities that it can be difficult to fit them all in. As a result, you’ll see lots and lots of big blocks of flats here. Some were built between 1950 – 1970 and others are more modern.

Unusual homes

How would you like to live in a windmill or a lighthouse? Perhaps you would prefer your own castle or stately home? Not everybody lives in houses and flats in the UK; in fact you can find some very odd homes indeed!

Houseboats in London

Some people choose to live in caravans or big tents called yurts for example, or on houseboats. Others convert old buildings like water towers, churches and schools. Some people even choose to live underground, like in this so-called hobbit house built by Simon Dale in Wales:

Today’s task:

Design and make a home suitable for living in today’s Great Britain.

OR

Design, label and make a typical home that can be found in Great Britain (it could be one of the above that I shared with you).

If you cannot make your home, please share the design. You can use lego to make your home – be as creative as you like!

You could even use these fun Houses and Homes Paper models – colour them in and send in photos once they’re glued together!

Design

Sketch and label your home. This can be as detailed as you like –  it could even include a design for the inside of the home!

Can you explain your choices?

Make

If you can and if you have the resources, create your home.

Evaluate

Let us know in the comments what you liked or didn’t like about your design. What worked well? Why?

Please send photos of your design/British homes via the Homework Uploader for the attention of MISS CARRUTHERS.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy the task!

  1. Hello everyone I hope you are all ok and are having a nice a day.

I did a house it was an old house but not mine because I couldn’t do mine. When I tried to upload it to the homework uploader it wouldn’t work I am going to try again bye.

  2. Miss Carruthers says:

That’s very strange that it didn’t work. Have another go: https://www.stvincentsprimary.org.uk/upload-homework/ and send it to me so that I can find your excellent design 🙂

  3. Miss Carruthers says:

I’ve uploaded your picture now – thanks for trying again! Why did you choose to make your house in this way?

  4. Miss Carruthers says:

A lovely house Sara! Could you evaluate your model? What went well? What would you like to improve?

  5. Miss Carruthers says:

Brilliant design Zavan, it looks very professional! What materials would you use to create your building?

  6. Miss Carruthers says:

A wonderful house Elsa! Can you explain why you chose to design it
    in this way?

  7. Miss Carruthers says:

Lovely Elena! What features did you want to make sure you included in your house?

  8. I would use: glass, cement, bricks ?, and plaster.

I liked that I had a rooftop terrace and that my building is a high-rise, but next time I would make it more modern, with entire walls made of glass and steel cables.

  9. Miss Carruthers says:

I liked that you had a rooftop terrace as well – I was very jealous of that!! Entire walls of glass would definitely be very modern!

  10. I chose to make it like this as it looks a lot like my real house with the different floors and rooms. I used Lego as I didn’t have a lot of recourses.

  11. Miss Carruthers says:

Very interesting to know Elsa, thank you!

  12. Mathilde :) says:

  16. Hi miss I have finished and sent it in to you!! ?

  17. Miss Carruthers says:

Thanks! Well done for using lego to create your house. Can you tell me about your thought process when you designed it?

  18. Hi everyone.
I think our is quite good but I think we could have whipped off the glue from the house. I like the windows that we did.
