Today’s English focus: Reading.
First, carefully read the following poem:
Try to practise reading this poem out loud with expression.
Write down any words you do not know the meaning of and find the meanings using a dictionary. This will help you to understand what you are reading. Then, ask yourself – what is the main message of this poem? What does the writer want the reader to feel?
Please answer in the blog comment section below.

Good morning everyone, I hope you had an amazing weekend. I did find this quite hard but I had a go. Here are my answers:
1. John gave the writer a whole packet of crisps.
2. I am suprised that he gave him the whole packet because the writer only asked for a crisp and instead he gave him the entire packet.
3. I think he says this because his family is very successful and he is generous enough to not give him one crisp, but the whole packet.
4. I think that it was a good idea as it made the people who had more than others think about how they should share and look at other people who are less fortunate than themselves.
Challenge:
I think that the message of this poem is to think about how many people are living in poverty and how others are very powerful. The authoe wants us to realise how lucky some people are and how the richest 1% of the population in the UK own as much as the poorest 55% of the population.
Yes, we definitely are very lucky. Well done Elena!
Hello everyone I hope you are all ok and had a nice weekend this is my answer for todays reading blog:
Thank you Claudia. I did have a nice weekend. Your answers did not show up?
1. John gave the writer a packet of crisps.
2. I was surprised by this because the writer only asked for a crisp but he didn’t ask for the whole packet. John must have been affected by the exercise in class so he decided to be more generous.
3. I think John says this because he was very affected and he wants to make sure that he shares his money with the poor people so they can afford food and shelter.
4. I think Miss Moss’s way to show the class how the wealth in the world is divided was a good idea because it shows us that a lot of the people in the world are poor and some of then can’t even afford a home or food. This means we must all share our money with the poor.
CHALLENGE:
The message of this poem is that there are far more poor people in the world than rich people but the richest 1% of the population in the UK own as much as the poorest 55%. We must all help the poor by the collecting money for them and donating food for them so that they can eat and they won’t starve. Charities also help them find a home so they don’t freeze on the street.
Thank you Theo for your great inferences to the text.
Hello everyone I hope you are all ok and have hade a good weekend this is my answer for todays English task:
John gave the writer of the poem a packet of crisp even though he only asked for one because John was a nice person.
No I wasn’t surprised by this if I was John I would want to do the right thing to, to share my wealth with others.
I think John said that because in class he was rich and the writer is poor if he ever actually gets rich he will share it with poor.
I think Miss Moss’s way of showing the class the amount of rich and poor was a good idea. To show the children that to be a good person when they grow up they have to be generous with everyone.
Challenge:
I think the moral of this story is that there is alote of inequality in the world. If you want to make a difference and be a good person help the poor and convince others to do the same as you do.
‘Inequality’ is a fantastic word.
Well done!
Hello everyone. I hope you are all well. These are my answers:
1) John gave the writer a packet of crisps.
2) I was surprised because he gave a packet instead of a single crisp which was generous.
3) I think John said “If I do get rich…I won’t forget you” because he learned from the lesson Miss Moss had taught.
4) It was a good idea because students like John learned to share.
Challenge:
The message of the poem is that we all need to share. The author is trying to tell us that we all have equal rights, but don’t have equal wealth. Very few people are really rich and have lots of luxury, while about 20% “ are reasonably well off.” Finally, the remaining people are poor and struggle in the world.
Thanks Ayako, I agree with you. There is enough for everybody! Did you find the last sentence effective? Why do you think the author decided to include this after the poem?
Hello everyone! I hope that you have had a great weekend! For today’s English task I did it with Elena using Skype.
*****************************************************************
THESE ARE THE ANSWERS…
– John gave the writer a packet of crisps when the writer politely asked for one. This shows that not all rich people are mean and harsh.
– I was not surprised at all. This is because I know that all people are different and it was easy for me to understand that the rich boy gave the writer crisps.
– When John says this message it means that he will remember all the people who are living poverty.
– It was not a good idea as all people are marked as equals no matter their wealth.

The message of this poem is that everyone is equal no matter their appearance.
The writer is trying to tell us that we should treat everyone equally even if they have more money or less money than us.
Have a lovely day!
can you make references to the text to support why you think the writer meant this?
1) John gave the writer a packet of crisps even though the writer only wanted one crisp this shows that the John was being kind and kind hearted.
2) Yes, I was surprised by this because sometimes rich people only think about themselves but John was being helpful and he cared about the writer and the people around him.
3) I think John says that becase he wants to remember that there are people less fortunate than himself, people that do not have a shelter, people that do not have food or a drink and he wants to remember that he is very lucky that he is rich .
4) I think Miss Moss´s idea was not a good one because the people might be ashamed that they are not as lucky as John but they also have to remember that everyone is special and unique.

The message of this poem is that we should treat everyone equally no matter if they are different
~Elena
1) John gave the writer a packet of
crisps instead of just one crisp.
2) I was not surprised because John was the writer’s friend and
John didn’t want to be greedy.
3) I think John doesn’t want to be one of the multi-billionaires.
John says that because he does not feel good about being pointed
out as one of the multi-billionaires in the class and he wants
to give.
4) It was a good idea because now John and the class understand the
injustice of how wealth is shared out.
CHALLENGE:
I feel sad and angry because the rich people are being greedy
and the poor people don’t have much money or even a house.
The rich have lots and lots of houses and other things.
I think it’s not fair and unjust.
The wealth is unbalanced and it’s not right.
Hi Gabi. Do you think all rich people are greedy? Some have earned their riches…
Hello everyone. Here are my answers for the grammar today. ?
1) John gave the writer a whole packet of crisps.
2) I was a bit surprised because if John gave the writer the whole packet of crisps even though the writer only asked for one.
3) Maybe because if John was very rich, he would be friends with the writer forever.
4) I think Miss Moss’s way was a good idea because it shows how many people live very poor and cannot afford a place to stay and the people who are very rich.
Challenge:
I think the message of the poem is that we should treat everyone equally and fairly and we should share our blessings with each other because there are many people living in hardship and can’t afford a house or can’t buy proper food.
I hope you enjoyed reading my answers and challenge. Have a nice day! ?
‘Hardship’ is a great work. Thank you for your answer – I agree with you.
Good morning Mrs Avdiu, here are my answers for today’s reading task.
1). Instead of giving the writer one crisp, John gave him the whole packet.
2). At first, I was surprised by this because I had actually expected John to give the writer no crisps at all, but I think this was because Roger Stevens wanted to show the reader that John was kind and he cared even though he might be richer when he was older.
3). I think that John says, ‘If I do get rich…I won’t forget you,’ because the writer wants to show that even if you are rich you still have feelings and you can still care about other people.
4). I think that Miss Moss’s way of showing the class how the wealth in the world was divided was a good idea because even though some people know how much rich people have and how much poor people have, they don’t put the two together in comparison.
Challenge:
I think the message of this poem is that even if you are rich, you should still care about other people because ‘God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them’ (Genesis 1:27). I also think that you should not treat people worse because you think they are are ‘less important’, in fact, you should treat them better since they are less fortunate than you and probably haven’t been given the same opportunities. I think the writer is trying to make us realise how fortunate we are and that it’s not fair that one person should get all the world while the others suffer.
Thank you for your incredible and detailed answers. You’ve comprehended the poem well! I liked your reference to Genesis there 🙂
Hi everyone this is what I have done for today’s English lesson.
Proportionally —> An equal amount of something.
Reasonably —> To do something in a sensible way.
1.) A packet of crisps.
2.) No because Jesus once said if someone asks you to walk a mile with them, walk ten miles with them.
3.) I think he says this because he thinks him and the other person could be friends.
4.) Yes because it showed the children that there should be no poor or rich people we should all have the same amount of money and even sometimes share it.
Challenge:
I think the message of this poem is to share and to be generous to all. The writer is trying to tell us it doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor you should always be generous.
~Iggy
Thank you Iggy. What effect do you think the author wanted to have on the reader? Did you find the last sentence after the poem effective?
Hi everyone,
I hope you are all having a great Monday so far! ?
These are the answers for the questions about the text.
1) John gives the writer a whole pack of crisps when the writer only asked for a single one.
2) Yes I was surprised that John gave them the whole packet. I agree with Theo’s answer and I also think that Miss Moss’ lesson taught him to be more generous in the future.
3) John says that because he wants the writer to know that if he really does get rich someday he will always share with the poor .
4) I think it was a good idea as Miss Moss wanted to show her class that there is always unfairness in society.
( : CHALLENGE : )
The main message of this poem is to show people that the rich should always share their money with the poor and that everyone should have an equal amount of money.
I hope that everyone has a nice day! ?????
Thanks Seb! Did you like the poem?
Yeah it was a lovely poem as it shows people about equality.
Hi Everyone,
1) John gave the writer a packet of crisps.
2) No, because John is being generous and sharing his wealth.
3) I think that John says it because usually, when your rich you tend to forget all about some friends as you think that your greater than them so you forget.
4) Yes, because it shows that many people in the world don’t have enough money to buy food or a home and that the everyone should be generous.
Challenge:
The message of this poem is that however rich you are, you should always be kind and generous to everyone. The author also wants us to realise about all of the people living in poverty and never forget how lucky we are.
Well done – I can tell you’ve read the poem carefully. Next time try to quote parts of the text to back up your answers. Please check spelling for ‘your’
Hi everyone.
1. He gave the writer a packet of crisps.
2. Yes I was surprised because he only asked for one crisp but he was generous and considerate ,and gave him the whole bag
3. To show the writer they will always be friends, and that he’s not just putting on a fake act
4. I think Miss Moss’s way to show the class the wealth of different ,people in the world, was a good idea, because money isn’t, because money isn’t everything, and that not all rich people are selfish and rude ,like John wasn’t.
CHALLENGE:
The main message of this poem , I think is that even if we think we don’t have anything ,there are people, who are worse and don’t even have a place to live. Also I think we should all be grateful and not ask for stuff unless we actually need it. The author wants the reader to feel grateful and to be kind to others ,who are less fortunate then ourselves.
I completely agree. I think this poem makes me feel grateful too!
Hello Mrs Avdiu & Ms Robertson,
These are my answers:
1*John gave to the writer the whole pack of chips despite the fact he asked only for one.
2* I was surprised that John gave his whole pack of chips because normally when someone asks for one, we normally give them what they ask. But, I wasn’t that surprised because this means that John understood the lesson of miss Moss and that everyone should share with each other.
3*John said ’If I do get rich… I won’t forget you’ because he gave all of his crisp and he would do the same thing, when he will get older, with money, if he gets riche.
4* Miss Moss way to show the class how the wealth in the world was divided is a good idea because she is showing to the class that no one is equal.
CHALLENGE:
What is the message of this poem?
What is the writer trying to tell us?
1* The message in the poem is that we should share and give some money to poor people.
2* The writer is trying to tell us that there are more poor people than rich people.
Thanks Violette. Why might the second statement surprise some people?
Hello everyone!
1)John gave a packet of crisps to the writer.
2) I was suprised that John gave the writer a whole packet of crisps when the writer only asked for a crisp.
3) I think he says if I get rich I won’t forget you because if he does get rich the writer will remember to share with the poor like John did with him.
4) I think Miss Moss’s way to show the class how the wealth in the world is divided a good idea as it shows us that there are many people in the world are not wealthy so it shows us that we need to share our money with the poor.
Thank you Tommaso. Please could you try the challenge question?
Hello Miss I have sent my answers on the Extension work on the Homework Uploader.
