Good Morning Year 5! Wednesday already…
Today’s focus: Spelling and Handwriting
We’re looking at words from the Year 5 and 6 spelling list.
This website helps to learn how to spelling these words and has some games you can practise. Please let me know in the comments if you have enjoyed a particular game on here that you would recommend to your classmates!
Have a look at the words below, practise writing them in your Home Learning book and then, if you can, ask your sibling or parent to test you!
How many did you get right?
When you’re practising your handwriting, remember to start and finish your letters in the right place, sit the letters on the line and remember which ones are tall and which ones hang below the line.
Challenge:
On the Blog, write a short paragraph or a short story narrative including all of the words above. Plan your sentences first to ensure that they makes sense before publishing the comment!

As Kate and Chris walked through the doors of their new studio, they were surprised to see a very awkward smile appear on everyone’s faces. K ate turned to Chris and started talking in a hushed voice. ‘Chris, we need to find a day that the whole team is available, if not-’ she took a long pause, and then carried on. ‘We will not be ready for those really tough competitions.’
‘Do you even know where the first competition is, Kate?’ asked Chris looking really worried. After a long silence, Kate replied. ‘It is somewhere in the cemetery…’ She got cut off by a girl called Emily who did not like the idea of going to a cemetery. ‘Excuse me Miss Kate, but I am not going to that place. Why don’t we have a committee to discuss our ideas? I mean, the last time I went to dance at a cemetery, I got this,’ she pointed to an egg shaped bruise on her hand. ‘So, please can we do it somewhere else? Please I rea-’ Suddenly, Emily got interrupted by a familiar voice…
‘Hello! It so nice to see you still here in zis trash place. Oh, yes! I just released zat you just bought zis studio…’ This was Lucian, a studio head from Kate’s rivalry team, they hated each other… ‘Anyway, I vas saying zat we could merge studios – you know, The Next Step and Elite – great show!’
‘He always wants to bargain – I hate him’ came Kate’s voice… ‘Well Lucian, we are performing in the Senior Category, so no! NOW, GET OUT!’
‘Chriz, vat iz ziz voman’s behavior? Zis should be a kind community.’ Chris just looked at Lucian as though he could not hear him.
‘Miss Kate, I need to do some spelling and I cannot focus – the words are really hard. Let me read you some: average, conscience and – ’

I hope to see you all soon!

Definitions are so important to help us to full understand what the words mean. Well done for writing an excellent story 🙂
Good morning everyone! This is my paragraph.
I went to the car showroom to buy a car. Sadly, only one car was available and it was in the saloon category. Although I didn’t like the colour which was a kind of bruise red, I bought it because it was a bargain and it had won the best saloon car competition. The car was a bit awkward to drive but it still had an average number of seats in the back.
I drove it all the way to the cemetery because we had a committee meeting with the whole community in the church to communicate what was in our collective conscience.
I hope you enjoyed my paragraph!
Well done Theo – I wasn’t sure you’d be able to get all the words in with a car story, but you managed it really well 🙂
Hello everyone, here is part of my short story for today’s blog.
CRASH! Louis spun around to see a wooden plank fall from above. Then, everything went black. He woke up gasping and sweating all over; he had been back in the cemetery again.
Ever since he had taken the short cut home through the graveyard, he had been having dreams about it, and today, a member of the committee from the community of Wandsworth was coming to see him about it. The plank had given him a huge bruise on the back of his head. Even his mum had finally given up pretending that he wasn’t falling behind the average outcomes for his age.
When the committee member arrived, he immediately staged an extremely awkward conversation with Louis. Before he left, Louis heard him saying something to his mum, catching a few words, “…boy needs special treatment… suites available… people in his category… sort something out… good bargain… no competition.”
??? ?? ????? ?? ?? ???? ?? ?? ??????? Louis thought.
What a dramatic paragraph! I love your opening – well done 🙂

Hello everyone I hope you are all well I did my spelling word and got 11/12 because I forgot an extra e in committee. This is my paragraph:
When I went to a cemetery to give flowers I accidently tripped over and had a big cut and a bruise so we went to the doctors office so he could disinfect it. When I got there with my dad we sat down on an available seat but it felt awkward for some reason. Just then the doctor called my name so we went in I showed him the cut and he bandaged it he said to keep it on for a week. Then I remembered something importante that was in a week and two days my basketball competition. I was an average player which was good but I didn’t want to miss it luckily I could still go. Two days before my dad had some bad news he couldn’t make it to see me because he had to go to his committee. I was sad but my mum would be there so she could record it.
;] I hope you liked my paragraph ;].
It’s strange that there is an extra e – I bet you’ll never forget it now 🙂
Excellent paragraph!
Suzan was awarded to be on a committee for a posh cemetery because she had won a competition. Suzan’s conscience was telling her to refuse, as there was a below average cemetery in her community, that needed her help. As she walked to her community cemetery to ask for a place there, she fell down, making a bruise on her elbow. This made her feel awkward. When she arrived she found that there was a place available for her. She immediately went to communicate the good news to her friends. To celebrate she went to Jenny Corkin’s Furniture shop to look for a bargain!
An excellent paragraph! I hope she found a bargain in the shop!
Hi Miss Coleman and Miss Carruthers,
Here is my English paragraph for today, I have managed to use all the words:
In my COMMUNITY there was a COMPETITION however the only problem was that to get there, I had to walk past the CEMETERY which always made me feel AWKWARD and uneasy. I was in the under 9 CATEGORY and despite training hard, I wondered if I was going to be above AVERAGE for I had a bad BRUISE on my leg which could slow me down. I was also wearing new trainers that were AVAILABLE in the sale; they were a great BARGAIN but I was worried that I might get a blister. It was a relay race and I would have to concentrate and COMMUNICATE with my teammates to win. Before the race, the COMMITTEE organisers made a speech announcing “Please make it a fair race today, for if you cheat it will way heavily on your CONSCIENCE.”
I hope you like my paragraph! See you soon,
Regan
Well done for writing your definitions with such neat handwriting. Keep it up 🙂
An excellent paragraph, well done!
Hello everyone. I hope you are all well. This is my work for today:
In the morning, a little three year old girl called Emily and her kind mother saw a pretty, pink bike in a shop window. It was available at a bargain price. The little girl loved this bike and fortunately, it was the right size. Her mum bought it!
The next day, she had a bike race -a competition- with Ruby her friend from school. “I’ll probably win!” exclaimed Ruby excitedly. “Let’s see,” replied Emily (she was excited quietly too). Unfortunately, shortly after the race started, Ruby came off her bike in an awkward fall and ended up with a big bruise on her knee.
Well done for using some of the words today 🙂
Good morning everyone, I hope you all are well! Here are my definitions and sentences:
* Awkward: Feeling embarrassed or inconvenient
* Competition: An event in which people take part in to show supremacy or superiority.
* We sat in the room, an AWKWARD silence filled the air and I looked down at my feet.
* I love sports day because there are so many COMPETITIONS to take part in and its so much fun.
Challenge:
We sat in the room, an AWKWARD silence filled the air and I looked down at my feet. I was still in my pyjamas and I was cold. I looked up and instead of seeing the little creature, I saw the same boy from the streets, which a had a COMPETITION against. He had BRUISES all over his body and I almost felt sorry for him. Obviously, he didn’t want any COMMUNICATION with me and was not happy. After a very long silence, I asked him “What’s wrong, why are you sad?” He didn’t answer at first but when I asked again he said that his Mum had left him in a CEMETERY just so his Mother could join a COMMUNITY club. I didn’t realise he had such a hard time at home. I felt so bad, but then he wanted to know where we were. Honestly, I had no idea…
I love how you used one of your sentences to then start your paragraph with. Well done 🙂
Hi everyone.
Available- When someone’s available they’re able to do something, they have time to do something.
Bruise- A bruise is a mark on a leg or anywhere else, that when you fall you get a bruise.
The average student is smart, although they’re boring, they will get quite far.
Nobody spoke, it was strangely, awkward and peculiar, they just stared in shock.
CHALLENGE:
My bruise was throbbing very awkwardly but it was definitely not pleasant. The shop on the street opposite sold bandages that were a bargain and was definitely not the average price. Suddenly, our competition started, the whole community started sprinting at top speed while I found a shortcut but my conscience slowed me down. The shopkeeper disappeared and was not available anymore and everybody started communicating again.
Fantastic work Sara, I love the words you have chosen in your challenge – they are very descriptive!

Everyone was looking at me awkwardly. Once I finished the race I checked my shoulder and there was a bruise. We went back to school and someone asked me what is my favourite food? it was out of two categories, hot dog or pizza. I chose pizza.
Brilliant Dylan! I’m sure your shoulder would be very sore after that 🙂

Dear diary
Today was the day at my new school, I was very excited but also nervous because it was in a different country and I didn’t speak the language fluently so it was hard to communicate. My mom said that the school could be haunted because there is a big cemetery at the back of the school, that made me even more excited I always wanted to go to a haunted school!
When my mom dropped me off, I saw a football pitch! I’m loving this new school already. The first class I had was writing, it was a really fun lesson, then it was break. It was wet play so we went to the cafeteria that’s when I noticed the vending machine! This is not a average school luckily I had some money in my pockets. There was a whole category of drinks and food, I was feeling quite hungry and there was a good bargain so I got some yummy crackers.
The next lesson was geography and I lernt all about AsiaThen it was lunchtime luckily it wasn’t raining anymore so we got to play outside in the courtyard, I was just about to sit on one of the tables when someone tapped me it was a girl she said that this table was not available and offered to sit with her, I agreed. We chatted for a long time until she said do you like playing football we can play together on the football pitch and I gladly agreed we played and played until the bell rang. When it was home time we said goodbye and went home.
When I got home my mom and my dad greeted me and said “how was your first day at school?” I said I loved it. Both my parents smiled then my mom said “why do you have so many bruises?” I said I must’ve bruised myself when I was playing football, my mom laughed then she said it’s dinnertime and we all had a yummy dinner.
I hope everyone has a great day ??☺️?

?CHALLENGE ?
As the children were AVAILABLE for the weekends, they entered a COMPETITION. When the event had ended, a child came home with a BRUISED leg as the parents stared at eachother in an AWKWARD silence. For some reason nobody would COMMUNICATE with anyone!
I hope you all have a nice day. Bye! ?
Well done Kayla! You’ve defined the words well 🙂
Hello Miss Carruthers,
Here is my paragraph containing all the words.
As she entered the creepy, haunted cemetery, Jiana felt awkward and her conscience told her to go away. However, she was very curious and brave so she tiptoed on. She entered the community’s local church and behind the big tent where the Christmas card competition has been held, the young girl saw a group of seven men, covered in bruises and tattoos. Jiana didn’t like the look of them and realised they were probably a committee of bad people. Her suspicions were confirmed when a bald man said “Right guys! We need to capture Liliana, the doctor’s daughter. He’s the right person, from the right category as he’s got lots of money. Here’s the plan. On Monday, there’s a big theatre concert and I heard she’s going. Luke, Harris, Ivor and Bill find out a way to kidnap her. Bert and Klaus hand over to me. The bargain is: you find her for me and you get half the ransom to share to pay your debts. Here are some talkie-walkies to communicate”. The bald man handed the devices out. A guy with purple jeans asked: “How can we recognise her?
– She’s taller than the average size, slim, blue eyes, black hair and pink glasses. Tell me when you’re available for another meeting. Tuesday would be ideal.”
Jiana’s body was a lump of terror. Supposing the meeting was over, she ran out of the church, out of the graveyard and back home.
Brilliant Jeanne, you managed to build a lot of suspense in your paragraph 🙂

Wonderful work Maia, I enjoyed reading your sentences 🙂
Hello Everyone,
Here is my English. I hope you enjoy it.
I sped through the CEMETERY like I was in a running COMPETITION but then tripped over a small grave (which was both AWKWARD for me and the corpse inside… I think). I stood up, my legs BRUISED and my elbows badly grazed. I was on my way to the church hall for the COMMUNITY COMMITTEE meeting as this was the only AVAILABLE space for such a large group and it was a BARGAIN because it was free to hire. It appeared that I was the only one here so my CONSCIENCE was telling me to leave but soon after everyone arrived. The first thing we had to was plan the upcoming math COMPETITION and COMMUNICATE and agree which children will be coming as we only want children above AVERAGE.
Brilliant Erin! Well done for using so many of the words 🙂
