Good morning Year 5,

Well done with your grammar work yesterday. You will be able to apply these skills tomorrow in your big writing task.

Today’s English focus is: Spelling & Handwriting

Please practise these spellings in your yellow home learning book as well as find the definitions (click image to enlarge):

This website helps to learn how to spell these words and has some games you can practise. If you find a great game that you think your classmates would like, please share it in the comments! If you can, ask your sibling or parent to test you on the above words.

If you want some more ideas of how to practise your spellings you could:
Use the Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check method to learn your spellings.

When you are writing these words in your home learning book, try to use neat, joined handwriting. Most of us have been typing on the blog but it is important to make sure we practise our handwriting too!

Can you write a paragraph or short story using more than two of these words? Let’s see who can include the most spelling words in their paragraph or short story! Please type this into the comment section below.

Plan your sentences first in your Home Learning Book to ensure that it makes sense before publishing it on the blog! If you are looking for a challenge, you could visit the Shakespeare Project.

Have you tried the Shakespeare Project? Please let us know in the comments 🙂

If you would like to read some more poems, similar to the one we looked at on Monday ‘Richest Boy in the World’, I have included some more pages from the book ‘Be the Change’ by Liz Brownlee, Matt Goodfellow and Roger Stevens. They are in the gallery squares below. If anyone has this book, please let us know! I hope you enjoy it 🙂

It is Wednesday so Miss Coleman & Miss Carruthers will kindly respond to the blogs for today. Thank you both!

Good luck with learning your spellings, Year 5!

Hello all, I wanted to share this important information with you! Today we are celebrating The World Bee Day! ??? The World Bee Day was declared by United Nations General Assembly on initiative of Slovenia, and it is being celebrated on 20th May since 2017, to bring awareness of the great importance of bees and respect to beekeepers’ work. More than half of Slovenia’s territory is covered by forests, and we know that forests are very important to beekeeping because they are the bees’ natural habitat. Bees are beneficial to forests because they are pollinators. The pollination of some trees and plants benefits the growth of fruit or seeds that enable the plant species to continue and reproduce further. Slovenian beekeepers transport their bees into forests for pasture and pollinate because our towns and villages are becoming more and more exposed to different environmental burdens that have a harmful effect on bees. It is the forest that can give them refuge in the future. I invite you to explore more about the importance of bees to our health and the health of our planet! To celebrate The World Bee Day, I draw this painting which I named “Bob, the pollen collector”. Have a lovely day and “bee” engaged! ??? ~ Nika ???

  1. Gabriella says:

“This new system is making the temperature in the room very cold.
Also the variety of people are complaining about the new version of vegetable soup on the yacht. And I really think we should have to re-do the whole of the upstairs room thoroughly as it is all falling apart!” Said Miss Rosetta determined to keep the door all the way open.

  2. Miss Carruthers says:

Miss Rosetta sounds very stressed with everything going on! Great sentences!

  3. Hello? everyone I hope you are all ok and are having a good day this is my paragraph, I have already done the spelling words

On my twelfth birthday ? I was driven on a vehicle ? in boiling ? hot temperature away from my family. When I reached my destination they got me and put me on a big yacht ? And I was sailing away on the sea to go to Milan. By the time I arrived it was lunch? time and I had to have vegetables ? with soup??. I didn’t understand what was going on and why I was here on my twelfth birthday . I hade a variety of questions to ask but I didn’t know which one to start with.
I hope you enjoyed reading my paragraph. Bye ?

  4. Miss Carruthers says:

Brilliant Claudia! Well done for using so many of the spelling words.

  5. Good morning Miss Coleman & Miss Carruthers. Here is my paragraph with today’s spelling words.

Tom was excited. Today was the day that everything had been leading up to. Today was the day that you got to try out your invention. The queue was enormous, stretching all the way across the playground, past the vehicle parking area, and finishing in the vegetable garden. The first person to try out her invention was Eliza. She stepped up on to the platform and told everyone about her creation. From what he heard, Tom deduced that Eliza’s invention was supposed to sort a variety of fruits and vegetables into categories depending on their sizes. Next up was Jimmy, who had designed a gadget that could measure temperature, wind speed, blood pressure, heart rate, calories, pressure, and stress and it all ran on a solar battery. After what seemed like hours, it was finally Tom’s turn and he explained to everyone what he had made. It was a machine that had a system that would scan your DNA and send you to wherever you wanted in space or time. However, there was one drawback, the machinery inside the invention that made it possible to travel throughout time could only stretch time for a certain distance. So on the twelfth turn of the main shaft you had to be exactly back where you started because if you weren’t, you would be lost forever in limbo.

  6. Miss Carruthers says:

What an imaginative paragraph Zavan, I love how you managed to fit so many of the words into your story.

  7. Hello everyone! I hope that you have had a great week so far! For today’s English task, I wrote the meaning of all the words and I also wrote a paragraph! I used the Oxford Dictionary to find the meaning of the words, I also used google, but I first needed to understand the meaning before I do anything else.

System = a set of things working together as parts of a mechanism or an interconnecting network; a complex whole.

Throughout = in every part of (a place or object).

Variety = the quality or state of being different or diverse; the absence of uniformity or monotony

Vehicle = a thing used for transporting people or goods, especially on land, such as a car, lorry, or cart.

Temperature = the degree or intensity of heat present in a substance or object, especially as expressed according to a comparative scale and shown by a thermometer or perceived by touch.

    Twelfth = the number twelve.

Vegetable = a plant or a part of a plant used as food, such as carrots, potatoes, cabbage or beans.

Yacht = a medium-sized sailing boat equipped for cruising or racing.

    PARAGRAPH ?
    ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

It was a night on the twelfth December. The lights were off, nobody was around, all except Sirius, Remus, James and Peter. They were great friends and they did enjoy sneaking out at night.
‘We need to climb in the yacht, we have to, it will take us to the cave, our cave,’ said James looking confident. His hair was so messy, some people would think that he just got of his broom – that was probably what he was hoping for.
‘O -o- ok, James, I will do as you say,’ whispered Peter, his face pale. Peter was like a vegetable, weak and boring.
‘Will you ever learn to be brave?’ asked Sirius rudely to Peter, who was even more scared now.
‘Shhh! Can you feel it? Te temperature changed, I swear it did,’ said Remus looking equally scared as Peter.
    ‘It’s the full-moon, isn’t is?’ questioned Sirius.
‘Yes Sirius, it is. I need to go into a vehicle before anyone sees me turn into a were-wolf and freak out, OK!’ demanded Remus looking as though there was no time to waste.
‘Let’s go,’James said, messing his hair yet again.’ It is the variety that makes this so fun, you know’.
‘WILL YOU BE QUEIT!? WE NEED TO KEEP QUEIT THROUGHOUT THIS JOURNEY! UNDERSTAND ME?’ demanded Remus who was getting really mad at his friends now.
Peter, James and Sirius exchanged looked, ‘OK! No need to shout.’ they all whispered at the same time.
    ‘Use the DNTMN system,’suggested James.
‘What even is that? I bury my face in books all the time and I have not even once come across that system before’ said Remus looking confused.
‘Oh,’ James replied ‘ that’s probably because I made it up just now whilst you were screaming -‘
‘W-what does i-it stand f-f-for?’ questioned Peter, who was now as white as white paint.
‘D stands for determined, N stands for not,T stands for to, M stands for make and finally, N stands for noises, determined not to make noises!’ James said simply.
The four of them laughed and clambered into the vehicle where the transformation began…

I hope that you liked my story!

  8. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done Nika! You’re right, it is vital that we fully understand the meanings of words so that we can make sure that we use them correctly.

  9. Hi Everyone,

Colt could not wait for his twelfth birthday. It was only in a few days. He thought that the temperature would be really hot on the beach (where he was going to have his party and he lived near it). Suddenly, he heard a huge rumble and looked out of his balcony, the wind was strong, it was really cloudy and the waves were a few meters tall. He looked around and something was missing. The bar had collapsed due to the fact of the big waves ( true story, it happened this winter near my house in Deiva Marina, Italy ). There were a variety of boats and yacht’s in the distance who looked like they were having a nice day. Colt suddenly started to day dream about him being in one of those boats but he had to focus on the fact that the bar’s had collapsed and he had to tell his mum but it was too late, there was a tsunami coming towards them (this didn’t happen)…

  10. Miss Carruthers says:

What a great paragraph Marco! You’ve made it very descriptive as well. Be careful with your use of apostrophes. You don’t need them for a plural (eg yachts and bars).

  11. Violette says:

Dear Miss Coleman and Miss Carruthers,
This is my paragraph I came up with:

A delightful man wanted to do two varieties adventures (it’s his twelfth adventures). The man loved in particular the system solar, and also being on a yacht in the river.
A day, he decided to go in space from in south America, where the temperature is boiling hot. Firstly, he decided to travel with his vehicle to go to South America. Then, he planned to stay in South America because it’s where the rockets take off for a long journey.

  12. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done Violette – very interesting sentences. Check your second sentence as there are a few grammatical errors which I think you could edit to make your sentence even better.

  13. Hi everyone.
Vehicle- A vehicle is something that people drive around in to move around faster than usual.
Temperature- temperature is something that makes you feel hotter or colder than usual.

My yacht is the largest most exquisite, luminous and has neon lights (on the front) that twinkle in the moonlight.

The fridge suddenly exploded off a whiff of revolting, vigorous vegetables, sprinkled with mould.

I quickly and speedily ran to my classy yacht, where the temperature was just right. The vegetables in the fridge were unfortunately freezing, because of the annoying systems. Though my vehicle was super shiny it still had to have a thorough wash.

  14. Miss Carruthers says:

    Excellent definitions Sara!

  17. Hello everyone. I hope you are all well. This is my paragraph:

Bob the gardener, arrived at his garden as usual. The temperature was 36ºc so he had to water the vegetables and a variety of other plants growing in his garden. Once he had completed the task, Bob went home to rest. To cool the house down, he turned on the air conditioning system. Hanging up his work clothes, Bob noticed he had lost his cap for the twelfth time! After a very thorough search, he found it in his vegetable basket “I must not lose it again,” he said to himself.

Sitting in his armchair reading his favourite magazine, Bob noticed a yacht he would like to buy in the advertising section. After some thought, Bob decided not to buy the yacht as he did not have a vehicle big enough to tow it home. Bob’s dream was to sail around the world to escape these hot summer days and enjoy the sea breeze. Although he would miss his vegetable patch.
