Task
Skill: To write a letter.
You may like to read over the poem on page 12&13 again HERE to remind yourself of the events that happened to raise money for charity.
Before you start writing your letter, let’s have a look at an example of a letter to remind us of important features.
Example
Checklist – What to include in your letter:
1. Start by explaining why you are writing the letter.
2. Write some information about your chosen charity, and why you would like to raise money for them.
3. Explain your idea of how the school will raise money (this could be a whole school pyjama day, school fair, class competitions – be creative!)
4. Explain the benefits for your idea – try to persuade Miss Coleman!
5.Write your finishing sentence.
Remember to include the date, who you are writing to and who the letter is from!
You might like to plan your writing first by jotting down some ideas.
Dear Miss Coleman
I am writing to you because if we could raise charity to the poor at school! I think we could raise money by doing like another pyjama day or something. Or maybe we could do a book fair or enterprise week!
I missing you Miss Coleman
From Reuben
A good start Reuben. Well done for checking over your writing. Remember to follow the checklist to make sure you include all of the important parts. Choose a charity you would like to support. I am looking forward to reading your finished piece tomorrow.
It would be great if you would give money to the charity for the homeless so they can have food instead of begging for food on the streets. I am sure it would make them very happy. So could someone give them money or give it
to the food bank.
A good effort Patrick. You have used some good persuasive sentences. Remember to follow the checklist to include important parts to your writing – how will you raise the money for charity? I am looking forward to reading your final piece tomorrow.
Dear Miss Coleman
I am writing to you because I think we should raise money and plan a special event to dress up like your favourite animal or something like that. Then the amount of money that we raise will go to St Mungos’ charity to give the money to the poor.
so the goal of this event is that if children dress up they will have to give £1 .
From Penelope Coumaros
Great effort Penelope. You have included important parts in your writing. To improve, you might like to add a little bit more detail – you could tell Miss Coleman more about St Mungos and the charity. You could also write about how school council could help you organise the day. 🙂
Dear Miss Coleman,
I am writing to you to tell you about how we could raise money for the poor, making them happier and improving life on the streets. We could have an event where every child cooks something and then bring it to the school to sell it and the money every child gets from selling their food would come to the charity or the food that the children cooked could even come straight to the charity.
I would be very happy if you agree because then the poor people can live a happy life like us.
A great start to your letter Samuel, you have made it clear what you are asking. As you continue writing, you might want to think how you will organise the day, will you meet with others to plan it? Will you lead an assembly to tell the children about the day? Good effort!
Hello Miss Jones, my mum let me type my letter onto a computer. I hope you enjoy it. I will upload it now.
Hi Orla, thanks for sending in your finished work! I have uploaded it to the blog, I will upload it to our published writing blog tomorrow as well!
Well done! You have worked hard to include important parts in your letter. I really like your idea to support the NHS. The singing gathering in the hall at the end of the day sounds like a great idea too. Good effort 🙂

Dear Miss Coleman
I am writing to you because I would like to raise money for WWF. WWF helps animals in danger. I would like to help the Rhinos, Elephants and Pandas. Poachers are killing Elephants and Rhinos
for their tusks and horns for souvenirs and decorations. People are also destroying the Pandas’ homes by cutting down the Bamboo Trees and when they do that the Pandas die from hunger.
A really good start Chloe K. I can see you have followed the checklist carefully to include important parts in your writing. As you continue, you can write about your idea for how the school will raise the money and how you will organise this 🙂
Hello Miss Jones, this is my answer:
Dear Miss Coleman
I thought the school could raise money for Cancer Research UK so that we can help children who have cancer. It is a charity that helps people who have cancer and carry out research to find cures for cancer sufferers, especially children.
Dear Miss Coleman,
I am writing to you to ask for your permission to organize a charity event at our school. During the event we would be supporting a charity called Blue Planet. This charity is important because it cleans up the oceans and saves marine life. We could raise money by oganizing an auction or wearing a pyjamas to school and bringing a pound to school. The pupils could dress up as underwater creatures!
A good start Helena, well done! I like your idea to dress up as underwater creatures to support the Blue Planet charity! As you continue, remember to include how you will organise this, will you work with green team to organise an assembly to tell everyone? Or will you hand out letters?
What a good charity you have selected Matthias. This is a strong start. I can see you have followed the checklist to help you. As you continue, keep on using the checklist to help you remember what to include. Remember to explain why you think it would be a good idea to raise money.
Dear Miss Coleman
It would be fantastic if we could raise money for a foundation that helps and looks after special care children. This foundation is called “Active Love.”
We can make a book week in which we will collect books and an art week in which we can paint or draw paintings and drawings, and then sell them at a school event organized on the occasion of Children’s Day.
I hope you like my idea, Miss Coleman.
From Karolina Nakonieczna

Letter to Miss Coleman
Thursday 21st May 2020
Dear Miss Coleman
I am writing a letter to you because I would love the school to take a part to build a flower Vase. The Vase will produce lots of flower and the wonderful smell. This Vase will have colours, stickers that you can put in hot water and it will stick on. All of this will be sold on October 11th. These Vases will go all around the world and everyone will love them. Finally, anyone who wants these Vases will be given one for any donation.
Good effort Chloe H, what a lovely idea you have. When you publish your writing, remember to include who will be making the vases and if Miss Coleman will need to buy any resources to do this.
Dear Miss Coleman,
Can we raise money for St. Mungos charity?
We could wear PJ‘s to school or have a dress up day and bring £1 to £3 or even as much as we can.
Yours sincerely
Emi
A good start Emi, as you continue writing, make sure you include a little bit of information about the charity and what they can do with the money you raise.
Dear Miss Coleman,
I hope you are well. I am writing to you to get permission to raise money for charity. We are going to raise it by doing fun activities so it would not cost the school anything.
This will give a chance to every child in the school to learn something new. If you give us permission. I will get a list of fun activities ready .
Your sincerely
