Happy Monday Year 3. I hope you are all well and had a lovely weekend!
I will be at the school hub today and for the rest of this week, so I will not be able to reply to everyone’s posts during the day. Miss Coleman and Miss Carruthers will be looking after the blogs, so you can say hello! 🙂

Today’s focus is:
Reading

We will read an interesting non-fiction article, answer questions and infer our ideas.

Our new text is:

Before reading the article, think about the following questions. Discuss your ideas with an adult at home (You don’t need to record your answers).
1.What is a heading and why do information texts have them?
2.What does the heading tell us about the text?
3.Using the picture, what evidence can you gather that will give us more information about the text?

a)  Read lines 5-6. What does the following phrase tell us? ‘They did more than break a record.’

Extension– Setting Description

Imagine you are a news reporter and you attend San Diego Jewish Academy on the day of the big event.  

Write a short paragraph to describe the scene. Were there crowds of people? Was it noisy? Was there tension or excitement in the air?
Use lots of interesting vocabulary to set the scene.

    My answers to the multiple choice questions:
    1. The alpha project.
    2. Because it is one of the rules that Guinness gave to school.
    3. How students broke a record while helping their community.
    4. Who the sandwiches were made for.

    Task 2

    1. It tells us that they’re also helping their community.
    2. Chaim Heller meant to make the world a better place.
    3. So the sandwiches were finished to go to the alpha project.
    4. Bread, toppings, butter, knives and boxes.
    5. They felt challenged because the timer was set to 3 mins.

    1. I think a heading is a phrase which tells in short words what the text or story is about. Information texts have them because it tells in short words the information.
    2. The heading tells us that there has been a school which was making 868 sandwiches for a charity to help poor families.
    3. I think it’s going to tell us about how they made the sandwiches and what they did to make 868 sandwiches.

  4. 1: A whole article summarized into one sentence to show what it’s about.

    2: That a new record might be coming in a book.

    3: They did it quite calmly and it was well organised.

    What ingredients were in the sandwiches ?

    Task2 :
    A. It tells us that they did more than breaking a world record, but also helped their community
    B. It means that he wants the world to be joyful and safe
    C. One rule was to film their work and another rule was that someone had to check the sandwiches and if a sandwich was not finished, it wouldnt count
    D. Before the event the parents had to talk to the Guinness world records and they had to prepare more than 50 tables and of course all the ingredients that they needed.
    E. I think the staff and students would have felt excited , happy and nervous to be in a special event

    Task 3 : Extension setting description
    Today is a big day in San Diego Jewish Academy in California, everyone had to prepare for a 3mn race to beat a world record of making sandwiches for the people in need .     There were lots of people, it was crowded and everyone was waiting patiently longing to hear the results. The children were muttering, the adults were excited and everyone breathed heavily. The teachers were looking serious the whole time but eagerly waiting. When they said the results everyone went silent, there were red faces and the children held each others hands and when they heard they made even more, everyone cheered. They were proud and everyone hugged whiles saying ” we did it “, it was lovely.

    3. They gave rules so that they could get proof and they wouldn’t cheat.
    4. They would need bread, veg and any other food that you would put in a sandwich, cameras, tables, people to inspect and to check the food, a timer.
    They would have felt pressured, stressed and excited because they were creating food for the poor.

    Extension work
    There were students and teachers walking everywhere I looked, it was noisy and looking at all this food made me absolutely famished. There were many tables with bowls of salads, butter, tomato sauce and cheese and the children were busy concentrating mixing these ingredients. I was not surprised to be told that there were so many sandwiches, and it took a long time for me to find a space were I could start writing. I even started asking some children questions about what they were making and what they were doing.

  23. Today we are at the San Diego Jewish Academy in California. They are trying to break world record in making biggest amount of the sandwiches. The number to beat 490 sandwiches in 3 minutes. The event is taking place at the school gym. There is more than 50 tables full of bread, cheese, tomatoes and lettuce. All parents are standing near the doorway. They are trying to cheer for their children. It is a bit noisy in here. One woman came and said to get ready. She set up the timer and screamed ‘3,2,1, GO!!!!’ everyone get moving. All the food is flying all over the table. At the end everyone is counting down ‘5,4,3,2,1, STOOOOOP!!!!’ Excitement is teaching the roof. They beat up the world record by making 868 sandwiches. Everyone giving each other high- fives.

    Extension work.
    As I entered the Academy the noise was so loud it made me feel unsettled. The room was full of happy people so it made me approach a table.
    This table had delicious food which was sandwiches.
    As I was rather angry I tasted one. I’m very happy with what these people are doing for the community.
    A simple sandwich raised so much money.
