Good Morning Year 2!

Click here for a printable version of this blog post: English Tuesday printable

I hope you all enjoyed the poems yesterday. Poems can be more fun that stories because you can be quite creative with the words you are choosing and the things you are trying to describe. They are often full of exciting words that make it more exciting for the reader.

One type of word that adds more description and detail is an ADVERB. It is like an adjective except that it describes the verb (the action / doing word). Click here if you need a reminder for what a verb is.

I walked through the park.

In this sentence, the action (or verb) is walk.

When we add an adjective, we would describe the noun (the park). So we could say:

I walked through the huge park.

When we add an adverb, we are describing more about the walk (the verb).

I walked slowly through the huge park.

I always walk through the huge park.

I happily walked through the huge park.

In each of these sentences, I gave more detail about the walking (the action).

Watch this BBC Bitesize video that tells us more about adverbs and try and do the quiz at the end.

Have a go at writing your own sentences with adverbs.

*If you want to challenge yourself, try to write a short story using these adverbs.
