Here is the recipe we used in today’s learning to make our lava lamps:

  1. Pour water into a plastic cup (but use a plastic bottle) until it is a quarter full.
  2. Pour in vegetable oil until the bottle is around three quarters full.
  3. Wait until the oil and water are separated and add a few drops of food colouring. Look carefully at how the food colouring passes through the oil and changes the colour of the water. Why do you think this is?
  4. Break one Alka-Seltzer tablet into smaller pieces and drop into your container and observe the bubbling.
  5. When the bubbling ends, you can add another Alka-Seltzer tablet or shake your bottle.

Warning: DO NOT EAT THE ALKA-SELTZER TABLETS.

Class 5, what did you think of today’s lesson and how did it help support your understand your knowledge of solubility?

Challenge:
Can you explore liquid density and using liquids at home make your own model and explain why certain liquids float on the top?

WOW! It is actually far easier than I expected, I will definitely try this at home.
