During the Summer term, we will be learning all about Food and Farming in the UK.
Farming has been practiced for thousands of years across the British Isles, and we will be learning all about the different types of farming that take place here in the UK. We will learn about plants that are grown, the foods that they produce, and we will also be thinking about the types of farms that keep and raise animals. We will be developing lots of our geographical skills throughout this topic, as we will look at weather patterns in the UK, thinking about how this influences the food that we produce and buy as a result. We will also be interpreting data to help us understand seasonality.
To understand more about how our eating and shopping influences the environment, we will learn about where in the world our food comes from. This will help us to develop our map skills, and we will also link this to our knowledge of weather across the world. We will eventually be answering our enquiry questions: how can we make better choices when buying food?
We are also really lucky to be taking part in a fantastic Schools to Market project. We will be teaming up with Green Team for this and it will show us the importance of knowing where our food comes from, and we’ll begin to understand how to grow foods, and how to sell them. We will be doing some great activities such as visiting a PYO (pick your own) farm for our ingredients. Green Team will be making chutney and will then be selling it at a nearby Whole Foods shop. We are so excited for this opportunity and can’t wait to begin!
To begin our learning, I’d love for you to answer these questions:
Have any of you ever been to a farm? If so, what did you see?
What types of animals might be raised on a farm?
What type of crops or plants do you think are grown?
What would you really like to find out about?
Every time I go to Ireland to see my grandparents, I’m on a farm. My next door neighbours have lots of sheep. When I go at Easter time I get to see and hold the baby lambs. They also have donkeys and cows! I would like to find out more about sheep and more about how vegetables grow.
How done’ s sheep grow?
I went to visit a farm in Reception. I have also visited 2 city farms. I saw chickens, a turkey, guinea pigs, ducks, sheep, pigs, goats, horse, and a pretend cow! I liked watching Tractor Ted and learning about farms!
Crops that are grown are for us to eat, like wheat, corn, yam, potatoes, carrots and radishes. Also feed for animals like grass for silage which is to feed the cows in winter.
I am looking forward to the Pick Your Own visit and learning how to harvest food.
I went to the farm in reception it was really fun there we got to stroke /see and feed them it was really fun and it was one of my favourite
l,ve been to the farm in reception it was really fun and we even got to feed the animals in the farm and we got to watch them run around I had a great time there it was one of my favourite school trips. I have some more favourite school trips that we have been to in year two.
We went to Hackney City Farm and I saw chickens and pigs and goats and ducks. Also the ducks and the chickens were out so we had to close the gate quickly so they didn’t escape. I saw a chicken lay an egg – it was so cool.
On a farm they can have some chickens, cows, goats, sheep, pigs and l think they can have some horses.
On farm’s the farmer’s can grow lots of fruit’s and veggies like carrots/celery/peas. l hope we all had a really good time when we all went to diffrent farms whith our family.
