Good morning Year 6!

Good morning Year 6 and welcome to today’s Geography lesson! Our topic this term is ‘All the World’s a Stage’ which as you know is a famous quote from William Shakespeare.

Usually, we would be preparing for our production and fingers crossed that we will still be able to put on a show if we come back to school but in the meantime we are going to continue on topic based on the theme of ‘Theatre’.

Last week we thought about famous playwrights and poets and William Shakespeare is considered one of the greatest playwrights and poets in history.

He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon but interestingly 1/3 of his plays are set in Italy! For example, Romeo and Juliet is set in Verona, Julius Caesar is set in Rome and Othello is set in Venice!

As I told you last week, I grew up in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon-see the map below.

If you look carefully, you can spot the ‘Royal Shakespeare Theatre’ and ‘Shakespeare’s Grave’.

As we learnt during Year 6, a map is a symbolic representation of selected characteristics of a place, usually drawn on a flat surface.

A Cartographer is a person who draws maps.

When visiting a new place, a street map (like the one above), is very useful to help you get around.

Maps like the one above, are ‘souvenir’ maps which not only contain details of the roads but also ‘tourist sites’.

Your task

Your task today is to create a map of your local area (or a place you know very well!). It doesn’t have to be a big map-include only a 10 minute walking radius.

Include:

  • Road names
  • Parks
  • Places of interest
  • 5 places that you’d suggest visiting (e.g. if you do Marylebone you may include ‘The Wallace Collection’).

In class, we studied OS map symbols. If you want a challenge, include OS map symbols e.g. train stations, schools, museums etc.

To help you to draw the streets (before you add the map symbols) look at your location on Google Maps or Google Earth.

Upload a photo of your map when you are finished!
