Hello Class 4!

In our last geography lesson we looked at renewable energy sources and thought about how we could use these on a deserted island. We then thought about how these non-renewable and renewable energy source affect our planet.

Today we are going to look in more detail at Climate Change…

What is Climate Change?

The sun plays an important role in shaping the Earth’s climate. The majority of sunlight passes through the atmosphere and warms the Earth. The atmosphere is the layer of gases surrounding the Earth. Most of the resulting heat given off by the Earth escapes into outer space. This cools the Earth. However, some of this heat is trapped by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and reduces this cooling effect. These greenhouse gases act like a blanket, letting in sunlight but trapping the heat it produces. Greenhouse gases include: carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, water vapour and nitrous oxide. This process is called the Greenhouse Effect.

Over the last hundred years or so, global temperatures have increased significantly. The best available climate science indicates that most of this warming is a result of increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases are present naturally in the air around us. However, human activities have increased the amount of some of these gases. For example, burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil. It is not just a question of the climate getting warmer though. Some places will get colder, there will be more storms and violent weather patterns, and the weather will become less predictable.

What does this mean for Earth?

A warmer earth is causing glaciers and ice sheets to melt. It is also leading to rising sea levels The summer ice in the arctic is predicted to disappear completely by 2040.

As the Earth heats up, sea levels around the world could rise. Cities on coasts would be liable to flooding.

Temperate places that now receive frequent rain and snowfall might become hotter and drier, leading to more drought. Frequent periods of drought would make it hard to raise crops for food, leading to famine.

Forest fires could occur more often.

Plants and animals unable to take the heat may go extinct, and be replaced by heat tolerant species.

What can we do?

– Drive less and try to walk more or cycle/scoot to reduce your carbon footprint.
– Use less energy in your home, for example turn off lights in rooms that are not being used.
– Be more green, recycle and use less plastic.
– Wash your clothes at a lower temperature as washing at a high temperature uses more energy.
– Spread the word.

Your task…

Create a poster all about Climate Change.

Your poster needs to include:
– An explanation of what climate change is.
– Examples of how climate change is affecting planet Earth.
– Suggestions of what people can do to help slow down or prevent the climate change.

Ensure your poster presents all of this information clearly. You might want to use bold colours and pictures to ensure your poster catches people’s eye and spreads the important message. You may want to look at the websites below for any extra information that you can use to add more detail to your poster:

I can’t wait to see your posters! Make sure you send them in so that I can upload them onto this blog for everyone to see!

  34. hello miss Climate change is the pollution of the earth contacting with the sun which makes the earth heat up. This happens because of the pollution in all the earth. Factories, non-electrical engines like car plane or steam trains.

I will send you a photo of my poster.

  35. Miss Lee says:

Great I can’t wait to see it!
