Don’t forget to ask for help if you need it!
As well as our zoom chat today, I am also on an online course with Mrs Avdiu. Please therefore be patient with the blogs today as I will not be able to check and respond whilst taking part in the course and whilst on our zoom call. I am also doing the Year 1 blogs so it has been taking me a little longer to reply to you all but please do not worry, I will read your comments and reply as soon as I can!
Comparing and Ordering Decimals
Remember our learning from last week. We looked at tenths and hundredths.
A hundredth is smaller than a tenth because…
A hundredth is 1 whole cut into 100 equal pieces.
A tenth is 1 whole cut only into 10 equal pieces.
Therefore, 10 hundredths make 1 tenth.
Let’s look at comparing decimals using these symbols: < and >
Imagine they are greedy crocodiles which always want to eat the bigger number. So the open bit (the crocodile’s mouth) always faces the bigger number.
For example: 10 > 2
This number sentence says 10 is greater than 2
The crocodile is trying to eat the number 10 because it is bigger than the number 2
Now let’s try with decimal numbers…
We look at the ones (or units) first because that is the largest digit value in both numbers.
In this case, 7 is larger than 3
We don’t need to look at the tenths and hundredths, we already know which number is smaller and which is larger.
So we write 3.7 < 7.3
What if the ones (or units) are the same?
When the one (or units) are the same amount we move to the next place value columns which is the tenths.
Here we can see 5 is more than 2
So we write 1.52 > 1.25
1.25 is the smaller number here so the crocodile does not want to eat that number. It faces the other number (1.52) because it is larger.
