Hello Class 4!

Today we are going to be revising writing fractions as decimals. It’s a little tricky but please do ask for help if you need it!

Writing Fractions as Decimals

When we write fractions as decimals it is easier to convert the fraction to a tenth or hundredth. However you convert the denominator (always convert by multiplying or dividing) you must do the same to the numerator.
It sounds complicated but look at the example below…

1/4 can be converted to hundredths because 4 multiplied by 25 is 100
That means we now have to multiply the 1 above the 4 by 25 as well so that the fraction still represents the same amount.
1 x 25 = 25
So our new fraction is 25/100
Use the place value columns to help you to write this as a fraction, just like I have done below:

The pictures below show how to write fractions as decimals using squares or the method I have just used:
1/2 can be written as 5/10
Place the 5 in the tenths column.
We always need a number in the units (or ones) column but we don’t have a number so we put a 0
So our decimal is 0.5

Have a look at this picture too to show you different ways of converting 1/4 into a decimal:

Have a go at the worksheets but please do ask for help if you need it. This is a tricky task!

Good luck and enjoy!

    Hello Miss Lee
I did the MNP pages with problem today. I didn’t understand page 30 in workbook 4B. Please can you explain it to me with detail? I’ll look back and check tomorrow.
    Elisa

  32. Miss Lee says:

    Hello Elisa,
If we look at page 30 question 3a…

    Write 3 and 3/4 as a decimal
So we know there are 3 wholes so we know that 3 will go in the units (or ones) column.
    Next we have 3/4
We know (from the previous page) that 1/4 as a decimal is 0.25
So for 3/4 we need to times that by 3
Use your knowledge of counting in 25s (we learnt that this year)
    25, 50, 75…
    So, 3/4 as a decimal is 0.75

Now we know that 3 and 3/4 as a decimal is 3.75

Try b, c and d and when you have finished I will explain question 4 🙂

  33. Elisa ?✨?? says:

Thank you Miss Lee, it was really helpful. I’ll look back in my MNP book to do it again. I won’t forget to do b and c.
    Thanks a lot,
    Elisa

  34. You are welcome Elisa!
