Today we are looking at solving word problems using multiplication and division.
Let’s look at this example question:
There are 3 notes and 6 coins. So that means each note can go with 6 different coins, meaning for each note there are 6 different combinations.
But, there are 3 notes. 3 x 6 = 18 therefore there are 18 combinations altogether.
Now try worksheet 16.
Have a look at this next example question:
We first need to work out how many paper cranes they have altogether. It says Sam made 81 paper cranes and he made 30 more than Ruby.
So, we need to work how many paper cranes Ruby made.
81 – 30 = 51.
Now we can work out how many paper cranes Sam and Ruby made altogether.
81 + 51 = 132
But we are not finished yet. The question says they put their paper cranes together to make 11 paper chains. How many paper cranes are there in each chain? We still need to do one more sum.
If there are 132 paper cranes in total, making 11 paper chains we need to divide 132 by 11 to see how many cranes were in each paper chain.
132 ÷ 11 = 12 (use your times tables to help, even in a division question because remember… division is the inverse of multiplication)
Now try worksheet 17.
