Workbook: 5A
Chapter: 2 Whole Numbers: Addition and Subtraction
Lesson: 1 and 2 Counting On to Add and Counting Back to Subtract
Printable version: Wednesday Maths blog week 5
Good morning Year 5,
Today we will begin revisiting addition and subtraction.
Counting on means that you start with the biggest number in an equation, and then count up from there.
Here is a video to help you recap on the multi-digit addition we did this year:

Please have a look at this video:
BBC Bitesize: Adding and Subtracting
Have a look at the working out to a problem below.
You could begin to count on in ten thousands to get to the final answer. Is this all we need to do? Actually, it is part of the solution, but remains incomplete. You could then continue counting on to get to the right number.
The number discs help to break down the place value of the number.
If you complete this, please try the challenge:
Here is the answer: answer
If you need further support, please have a look at the Adding and Subtracting BBC videos.
Please write in the blog if you need help or have any questions!
Miss Coleman and Miss Carruthers will kindly respond to the blogs today. Thank you both 🙂
Good luck Year 5
