Good morning, Year 5!

Today’s Maths Task: Estimating the area in kilometres.

Workbook: 5B

Chapter: 12 Area and Perimeter

Lesson: 11 and 12 Estimating the area

Area is calculated by multiplying the length of a shape by its width. Sometimes we need to estimate area. Today you will estimate the area of shapes.

Let’s take a look at this (click image to enlarge):

It is hard to work out the area of a shape like this because the edges aren’t straight.

First we would need to look at the scale and how much each square is worth.

We can then think about: how many full squares do we have? How many mostly-complete squares do we have? What do you estimate the area will be using this knowledge? This can help us to estimate the area.

Here is another example with answers (click image to enlarge):

Watch this video on estimating and measuring area.

If you need support:

Try to identify the amount of complete squares first. Then identify partially-covered squares and decide if they are significant or less significant? After this, you can make a realistic estimation of the number of square kilometres of the shape 🙂 If you have printed out the shape, you could colour the full squares one colour and the mostly-complete squares another colour.

Challenge:

Try these: area word problems!

If you haven’t already, use this online (and printable) activity to challenge yourself on measurement.

Marking your answers
As you and your parents now have access to Maths No Problem, I will continue to set daily worksheets for you to complete at home. They may be worksheets that you may have already attempted in class but that’s okay! It’s important that you revise and practise your skills. More information about how to log in to Maths No Problem can be found here.

You do not need to print these worksheets out – you can simply using your yellow books to show your working out and write your answers. You or your parents can then mark it as you now have access to the answers.

Therefore you will not be required to write your answer in the blog comments section as before. Please do comment if you need help or have any questions about the task. Also, please read each other’s comments and help each other out if you can! It is important we stay in touch and talk to each other about maths using mathematical language just like we did in the classroom 🙂

As today is not my usual working day, Miss Coleman & Miss Carruthers will kindly respond to the blogs for today.

Good luck!

Mrs Avdiu

    Hello everyone!
Good luck with today’s Maths No Problem task – estimating area.
    Have a lovely day!

  2. Hello everyone, I hope you are enjoying your Wednesday morning.

I just wanted to say I finished doing maths no problem. This task was really fun, I liked the part where you had to work out the measurements for the rectangles.
    Thank you.
    Maia?

  3. Miss Carruthers says:

I’m glad you enjoyed it so much Maia. Do you have any tips to share with the rest of the class?

  4. Hello everyone! I hope that you have had a great ?? day so far!

I did today’s task and I finished it a few minutes ago. Anyways, as Maia had said it is a very fun task and I think ? that I’m getting better at it everyday.

If you haven’t already you can check the Bitesize website if you need help to work things out.

    I have another tip…

    COUNT THE FULL SQUARES FIRST!!!

I always count the full squares first and it easier for me.

    Have a lovely day ?

  5. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done Nika. Thanks for the excellent advice. BBC Bitesize has some really helpful videos and games to help you practise so many different subjects.

  6. Hello everyone! I hope you are all having a nice day so far!

I found these questions trickier than yesterday but I just counted the squares first.

My sister marked it and went over the wrong answers with me!

    Have a nice day! 😀

  7. Miss Carruthers says:

I’m glad you have your sister there to help you. Well done for remembering to count the square first, this definitely makes it easier to work out. Great work!

  8. Hello everyone, I hope you’re well, by the way which pages are you supposed to do because I did work sheet 11 but was I supposed to do the mind workout?

  9. Miss Carruthers says:

Hi Zavan, looking at the instructions from Mrs Avdiu, it looks like you are supposed to do worksheet 11 and 12. There are extra challenges which you could try as well (look towards the end of the blog post). I don’t think you need to do the mind workout today, but don’t worry if you have already done it!

  10. Hello everyone I hope you are all having a nice day!
I enjoyed doing the maths today. I found the questions a bit trickier.
