Workbook: 5A
Chapter: 3 Multiplication and Division
Lesson: 7 Multiplying by 10,100 and 1000 and Lesson 8 Multiplying 2 Digit and 3 Digit Numbers by a Single Digit
Printer-friendly version: Monday maths blog
Good morning Year 5,
Today we will continue revising multiplication.
Have a look at this word problem:
A dozen is 12 so ‘half a dozen’ means 6.
Have a look at the way it is worked out here:
When you multiply by 10, 100 and 1000 you do not ‘just add zeros’! This actually does not make sense because ‘adding zero’ means you are adding nothing!
When you multiply by 10, 100, 1000 and so on, each digit actually shifts to the left on a place value table because you’re adding another place to the number.
When we multiply a number by 10, the product is the number with 1 zero to its right.
When we multiply a number by 100, the product is the number with 2 zeros to its right.
When we multiply a number by 1000, the product is the number with 3 zeros to its right.
Have a look at this video: BBC Bitesize: Multiply pace value 10 100 and 1000
When completing Lesson 8, please remember that breaking apart numbers is helpful when multiplying. Avoid disregarding the place value and multiplying the digits instead of their values. Make sure you always keep the values in mind:
If you finish this, please try the extension: multiply and divide by 10 100 1000 Challenge Cards
or try another maths activity here.
If you have forgotten how to divide by 10 100 and 1000, leave those particular cards for the day which we will look at dividing by 10 100 and 1000. You can focus on the multiplying cards for today!
The answers can be found here: multiply and divide by 10 100 1000 Challenge Cards – Answers
Please write in the comments if you have any questions.
Good luck!
