Lesson: 13 Multiplying a 2 Digit Number by a 2 Digit Number and Lesson 14 Multiplying a 3 Digit Number by a 2 Digit Number
Printer-friendly version: Thursday maths blog
Good morning Year 5!
Today you will continue to revisit multiplying a 2 digit number by a 2 digit number so make sure you look back at yesterday’s blog.
Then, you will be multiplying a 3 digit number by a 2 digit number.
Here are some video demonstrations on how to multiply 2- and 3-digit numbers.
Here is the column method:
Here is the grid method:
Which method is your favourite – column method or grid method? Let us know in the comments!
Here is another example of this taken from the MNP book:
As you can see from the top method, the numbers are separated so 10 x 132 is done first and then 2 x 132 is done second. The answers to both of these are then added together to get to the final answer. This last step is very important!
In the second method, the column method is used but it’s very important that the numbers are in the right place so try do this as neatly as you can.
To consolidate your learning further, please try: Multiplying-3-Digit-Numbers-by-2-Digit-Numbers
Please try the extension, once you finish the worksheets: Multiply 3-digits by 2-digits
You can find the answers here: Answers – Multiply 3-digits by 2-digits
Please write in the comments if you need any help.
Good luck! If you have already completed these worksheets in your book, try the blank pages online and see if you can answer correctly this time round too!

Hello everyone! I hope that you are all safe and well!
I found both columns good and easy to follow along, but since I am used to the column method, I found the graph one more interesting.
I am doing the extension work now but I will not write the answers so that other children don’t just copy what the person before them did.
I hope that you have a great day and see you all soon!
Thank you for keeping your answers to yourself 🙂
It’s good to have two methods to practise, and then you can choose which one works best for you!
Hello everyone! ☀️
I finished maths and I found it quite easy.
I hope to see you all soon!
Have a wonderful day.?
Maia?☀️✨?
Brilliant work Maia! Did you manage to try any of the extra activities today?
Yes, that is true!
I only did one page of the extension, but I will carry on after!
That’s okay, sometimes it is good to take a break 🙂
