Pirate Shopping

You are a pirate! You have decided that you would like to set up a shop but it has a special rule; pirates are only allowed ten pounds each and all items cost one pound. Check that shoppers buy no more than ten items.
Have a go at being the cashier and the shopper, don’t forget to use your pirate voice!

You will need:

  • some coins and a purse
  • ‘treasure’ (necklaces, gold chains, buttons, ‘jewels’ etc.) and a treasure chest
  • food and drink
  • nautical equipment (sword, telescope, eye patch and hat)
  • bags for treasure purchases

Focusing Questions:

  • How many items have you bought?
  • How much have you spent so far?
  • How much have you got left to spend?
  • How many more do you need to buy to make ten?
  • Why did you buy this item?

Extending Questions

  • How much will it cost to buy two jewels?
  • How much will you have left?
  • How do you know?
  • How many items can two children buy altogether?
  • Can you make a shopping list?
  • If jewels are ’buy one get one free’, how many will you get for five pounds? How do you know?

  3. Good morning pirates !
I am pirate Sibylle, first I set up my shop and dressed as a pirate. I bought 9 items in total so I still have 1£. I bought necklaces and lots of precious things because I like that and I will make jewels with it.
It costs 2£ for 2 jewels and after that I will still have 8£.
It is easy to count with 10 because we have 10 fingers !

Hello, Sybille. I love that you dressed up as a pirate for this task! You’re right-adding and subtracting to ten is much easier if you use your fingers.

Hi Reception. Miss Savage is working at the hub school this week so I’m looking forward to reading all your comments and seeing your hard work.

  6. Ahoy me hearties! Lovely photo Pirate Sibylle, I want to come to your shop.

I’ve bought 1 waterbottle and now I’ve got £9 left. I’m also buying a gun so I have £8 left to spend. I bought these because I need water and to stay safe.

2 jewels will cost £2. I will have £8 left. I counted down from 10 “10,9,8”. Two children will have £20. My list is a sword, an eye patch, a parrot, a hat, a hook and precious stones.

    BOGOF is 10 jewels. I doubled 5.

  8. Florence and Philip have loved making a pirate shop. Philip is a very strict shop keeper, he does not let you spend more than you have. Florence is struggling with this concept as she is a shopoholic!

We had in our shop a lot of princesses, a bracelet and a crown.
Philippa bought 6 items and then came back for 1 more. She spent 7 pounds. We have left 3 pounds. I have to buy 3 more things. She bought does items because she liked them the most.
We had a lot of fun doing this assignment.
Will send you a picture by email

  15. Hello fellow pirates and Miss Siswick! I bought 3 jewels and had £7 left, then I bought a golden chalice and chocolate biscuit (£2) and had £5 left. Then I spent the rest of the money on buying 5 more jewels and biscuits, so I had no money left!

  17. ? sorry to be late but I thought I sent my message already this morning…
    I bought 4 items. I paid 4 pounds ?. I had 6 pounds ? left (10-4=6). As a real pirate I used a Chinese abacus ? to check my result.
I need to spend 6 pounds more to have 10 items.
It will cost 2 pounds to buy 2 jewels ??. I will have 8 pounds left if I have ten or 4 if I have 6 left (10-2=8 or 6-2=4).
Two children together can buy 20 items (10+10=20).
If jewels are ‘buy one get one free’, with 5 pounds I will get 10 (2+2+2+2+2=10).

  18. I have bought a necklace, a shiny ball, a light cup and a bracelet, I spent 4 pounds. I have left 6£ to buy 6 items.

  19. I bought 1 sword, a pirate’s hat, a pirate’s costume (because I like to dress well) and a telescope. I spent £4 and I have £6 left. To get up to 10 items, I need to buy 6 more things.

It will cost £2 to buy 2 jewels because they cost £1 each. I now have £8 left, which I will use to buy sweets and chocolates!!!

  20. I sold food, gems and candles in my pirate shop. I made a lot of money.
