Lesson:5 Finding Prime Numbers and 6 Finding Square and Cube Numbers
Printer-friendly version: Friday Maths blog June 5
Good morning Year 5,
Today we will be consolidating our learning by continuing to find prime numbers and finding square and cube numbers.
To revisit prime numbers, please have a look at yesterday’s maths blog.
SQUARE NUMBERS
A square number is the result of multiplying an integer (not a fraction) by itself.
Example: 4 × 4 = 16, so 16 is a square number.
Here are the first few square numbers:
0 (=0×0)
1 (=1×1)
4 (=2×2)
9 (=3×3)
16 (=4×4)
25 (=5×5)
…
CUBE NUMBERS
A cube number is the result of using a whole number in a multiplication three times.
Example: 3 × 3 × 3 = 27, so 27 is a cube number.
Here are the first few cube numbers:
1 (=1×1×1)
8 (=2×2×2)
27 (=3×3×3)
64 (=4×4×4)
125 (=5×5×5)
… etc
How do cube numbers get their name?

If you have completed the MNP (please do it again even if you have done it in school – blank worksheets can be found online), then you can try the extension: square numbers extension

Good morning Mrs Avdiu, I have just finished today’s math extension; the worksheets were very fun but the extension was a little boring, although the explaining questions required a lot of thought.
Thanks Zavan for your honest feedback. The extension is a chance for you to keep practising those skills so I am glad you put a lot of thought into the explaining questions.
Sorry you found the rest boring! It’s a challenge to make square and cube numbers fun but I tried my best! Have a good weekend
