Now that we are experts at solving multiplication and division word problems, today we’re going to do a mixture of the two. The key thing to do first, is to work out whether you are MULTIPLYING or DIVIDING.
Remember, if you have lots of something the same and want to find the total, then this is multiplying. But, if you have a big amount that you are splitting into similar groups, or finding the individual amount, then it is dividing.
Have a look at today’s guided practise:
Question one shows the total and wants you to work out the individual. This is division.
Question two has individual items and wants you to work out the total. This is multiplication.
Once you have had a go at worksheet 7, you can consolidate your learning by doing this Oak Academy Lesson. Let me know how you get on with it!
For today’s challenge, can you write your own word problem that uses multiplication or division? First, decide if you are doing multiplication or division. You can use either of these sentences scaffolds to write your word problem, or you can do your own. Try to use your 2, 3, 5 or 10 times tables as these are the ones people know best!
Multiplication: I have __(number) of __(item). They each weigh ___(number). How much do they weigh altogether.
Division: The mass of ___(number) identical ___items is ___(number). How much does each one weigh individually.
I have done my Maths!
Great work Adrien 🙂
I have done my worksheet and the much, much easier mind workout. Here is my word problem.
Q: William has 30 pieces of cake (luckily nobody’s going to force him to eat them all himself like in Matilda) and he is going to share it between himself and four friends. How many pieces do each of them get?
I’m glad you found the mind workout easier today 🙂
What a great question – I have taken your answer away so that others can try and solve it if they want. And then you can mark them ⭐
