Workbook: 6B

Chapter: 8 Ratio

Lesson: 4 and 5 ‘Comparing Quantities’

Yesterday we reviewed our learning and for the rest of the week we are going to revise ‘Ratio’.

Now, before you quickly go to your MNP book and tell me that you’ve done the pages, I would like you to login to MNP and find the worksheets online.

Look through them first and see if you can still understand them as it is so important that you are able to recall prior learning.

Also, the extension task is for everyone! So please challenge yourself and have a go! Remember, the blog is there to ask any questions so please ask away 🙂

Ratio

How many blue shapes compared to pink shapes?

There are 15 blue shapes to 20 pink shapes so the ratio is 15:20

Can this ratio be simplified? Yes!

It can be simplified to 3:4

Remember

Remember, just like fractions, ratio needs to be written in its simplest form!

Step 1: Write out the ratio as it is shown e.g. 2700:450

Step 2: Simplify the ratio (look for common factors)

Step 3: Write out the ratio in its simplest form

Tasks

  1. Hello Miss! I have done the MNP pages. Because the site limits the attachments to three and the size to 10MB (definitely not enough) I have to email the pages to the office.

  2. Miss Gorick says:

Brilliant work Charles-I have just received them! I will forward your suggestion ?

  3. Elly(●'◡'●) says:

    Good Morning Miss Gorick,
I am now doing the extension.

  4. Aryan :D says:

    Done!

  5. Miss Gorick says:

Well done Aryan ? did you complete the extension as well?

  6. Elly(●'◡'●) says:

Could I please get some help with question six of the extension.

  7. Miss Gorick says:

    Hi Elly, yes of course.
So for every 1 banana, you have 2 oranges and 3 apples. That’s 6 pieces of fruit altogether.
So if Sapna uses 24 pieces of fruit, how many oranges will she use? How do you get from 6 to 24?
Have another look and let me know how you get on!

  8. Elly(●'◡'●) says:

    Thank you!

  9. Elly(●'◡'●) says:

I have divided by 6 from 24 and got 4

  10. Miss Gorick says:

Well done Elly 🙂 So now you have to multiply the number of oranges by 4 to get your answer.

  11. Elly(●'◡'●) says:

    I understand now thank you!

  12. Miss Gorick says:

The answer in MNP is wrong! The answer should be 18cm…did you get it right?

  13. :) jade (: says:

    I have just finished 🙂

  14. Miss Gorick says:

Great work Jade! Did you try the extension?

  15. Good morning miss,i was just wondering if you could help me on page 24 question ‘b’

  16. Miss Gorick says:

Hi Ariella 🙂 Thank you for your question. So the ratio is 3:4 and the longer piece is 36cm. To work out the length of the shorter piece you need to work out what each ‘part’ equals.
As the ratio is 3:4 (shorter to longer) there are 4 parts in the longer piece. So you do 36 divided by 4=9.
Now you know that each part is equal to 9 you can work out the length of the shorter piece as it contains 3 parts.
    Does this help?

  17. ♊Laetitia♊ says:

Hello miss Gorick, I did what you told ariella but when I checked the answers online it said 63cm and I was very confused.

  18. Miss Gorick says:

Hi Laetita 🙂 That is very strange! I have checked and that must be a mistake as the answer should be 18cm. 54 cm in total when the short piece and long piece are added together.
    Did you get 18cm?

  19. Done!

  20. Miss Gorick says:

Well done! Have you tried the extension?

  21. ♡ Haleema ♡ says:
