Lesson:  10 Word Problems

Now that we are confident with our 2, 5 and 10 times tables, we now have to try and answer some worded problems on them.

The most helpful thing to remember, is that multiplication can be done in any order. So 2 x 7 is the same as 7 x 2 and both give the answer 14. If you come across a question and you’re not sure how to do the times table, switch the numbers around and see if that is easier for you.

It can also be helpful to draw out the question. As you can see from my drawing below, they can be very simple pictures just to help you visualise it.

From the picture, there are then 3 different ways you can work it out.

  • Count up in 5s. This way is good for times tables you are familiar with
  • Repeated addition, adding the bags together. This was works with smaller numbers.
  • Using your times tables. This is the best way to do it because you can use it with bigger number when you are older!

Don’t forget to do the Activity Time (in the text book) and then you can do the Worksheet.

*If you want to practise your times tables more, try out these quizzes. This one has 15 questions and this one has 25 questions.

*If you feel confident with these questions, then have a go at these problems. You’ll notice that each question says “explain your reasoning”. It isn’t just the answer I want, but why that is the answer. You can use the number sentence to explain or try to use words.

    Dear Miss Carruthers,

I did my maths no problem work. I found it not too difficult.

    Greetings from Sophia ?

  2. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done for doing your Maths work!

  3. Albert Einstein says:

14 Because 14 can be split into 7 and 7.
    14 Can also split into 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2 and 2.

    4 × 5 = 5 × 4.
    5 × 4 = 10 × 2.
    5 × 4 = 2 × 10.

    Í
    3 × 10 is bigger than 4 × 5 even though 4 × 5 has more packet’s.

  4. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done for solving the Maths problems Albert Einstein!! Try to see if you can write a sentence to explain why those are the correct answers.

  5. Sophia B says:

Dear Miss, I finished the maths worksheets and the quiz.
    1) They should get 14 marbles because this number can be divided by 2. 13 and 19 cannot be divided in 2. Any number in the 2 times tables can be shared in 2.

    2) True – 5x 4= 20, 4×5 =20
    True – 5×4 =20 , 10×2 =20
    True – 5×4= 20, 2 x10=20

I noticed that it doesn’t matter what way round the numbers are , you get the same answer.

3)4 packets with 5 biscuits in each is 20
3 packets with 10 biscuits in each is 30
so 3 packets has the most biscuits.
    ?

  6. Miss Carruthers says:

Wonderful work Sophia, you’ve done so well to explain your answers with either a number sentence or a written explanation. Well done!

  7. Miss I have finished my maths. I am going to start mathletics.

  19. EMI and ISA says:

We finished all our homework and the challenges.
    1. The bag that you can share equally is that one with 14 marbles.
14:2=7. Any number in the 2 time table you can share it equally and any even number can be shared equally.

    2. They are all true and they are all equal to 20
5x 4 is the same as 4x 5 as we swap the numbers but the result is always the same.
    5×4 is the same then 10x 2 and 2×10 .

    3. 3 packets with 10 biscuits = 3×10=30
    4 pockets with 5 biscuits = 4×5= 20
    30>20

  20. Miss Carruthers says:

Brilliant girls. I love how you used the number sentences to explain your working out and the answers you got.

  21. I have it completed

  22. I have completed it and the challenges.

  23. Dear miss Carruthers,
    1. True, because multiplication can be done in any order.
    2. 3 packs of biscuits with 10 in each packet has more biscuits because that will be 30 biscuits and the other will be 20 biscuits only.

  24. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done Sophie! Can you write the number sentences for your second answer?

  25. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done for working through the challenge Nadine!

  26. Catherine says:

I’ve completed the Maths worksheet and activity time and found it OK.
    1. The answer is 14 as it can be divided equally by 2 and they get 7 marbles each. It is an even number which can be divided in half.
    2. The answer is 20. If you swap the numbers around, we still get the same answer.
    3. The answer is 3 packets of biscuits with 10 in each. When you multiply the numbers, the answer 30 is greater than 20.
    4X5 = 20 and 3×10 = 30

  27. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done Catherine. I’m impressed that you’ve explained your answers for the challenge.

  28. John + Rebecca says:

We completed the worksheets, quizzes and challenge questions.

  29. Miss Carruthers says:
