Well done for your work yesterday. Now that we know the coins well, we can use them to make different amounts.

*If you want some support, it can be helpful to have coins to count, to help you keep track of your totals. You could use actual coins, print out pictures of coins or draw your own as you are counting.

Just remember, you can only use our real coins. Don’t make up any amounts by having a 3p coin!

For Worksheet 6, we’re asking how many of one type of coin, makes up the other type.

Let’s break down the first question:

  • How many 10p coins make up 20p?

  • How many 5p coins make up 20p?

  • How many 2p coins make up 20p?

  • How many 1p coins make up 20p?

You’ll (hopefully!) notice that it is actually very linked to our times tables and counting in 2s, 5s or 10s. This is why knowing our times tables is so important!

Have a go at the two worksheets.

Once you have finished, if you want to challenge yourself further there are two challenge questions for you to do. The first one is slightly easier than the second one, so try it first. If you managed to solve it, then you can try the second one 🙂

By “one type of coin”, it means only 5p coins (for example)

Try and work out whether you can make 97p using only four coins (of any number) and that explain whether he is right or not.

  1. On the second challenge Sam is not right because 77 is closest number using 50p,20p,5p and 2p.
On the first challenge you can make 80p using 8 10p or 16 5p coins.

  5. Miss we can only make 97p using five coins.

  6. Miss Carruthers says:

    Which coins would you use?
Does this mean Sam is right or wrong..?

  7. miss I have finished my worksheets and felt confident I did get all of them correct but now I am going to do the other things that you put on the math.

  8. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done Layla! It’s a good idea to work through the worksheet first, and then you can tackle the challenges. Good luck!

  9. I did my other stuff the answers are 80, 40, 15, 8 and 4. The Sam one no you can’t make 97 with 4 coins.

  10. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done Layla. Which coins would Sam need to make 97p?

  11. Anna & Esther says:

  13. Hello Miss
I have done my work and on the second challenge Sam is wrong you can’t make 97 p with just using four coins if you use 20 +50 + 20 + 5 +2 it makes 97 but this number needs 5 coins.

  14. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done Marisa, you have explained your answer well 🙂

  15. I finished my maths from yesterday and today, including the challenges.
    Challenge 1: 8 x 10p, 16 x 5p
Challenge 2: I think the closest Sam can get to 97p is 95p with 4 coins. He needs another coin, a 2p to make 97p.

  16. Miss Carruthers says:

Well done Nadine! For challenge 2, which coins would Sam use to get to 95p? That’s our closest yet!

  17. Hi Miss I have done ✅ my maths no problem ? and it was quite tricky

I’ve completed my maths worksheets and the challenge activities. It was OK.

    Challenge
1: The total amount is 80p. You can use 8 10p coins and 16 5p coins.
    2: Sam can’t make 97p using 4 coins because the denominations don’t add up with 4 coins. 50p + 20p + 20p + 5p = 95p
To get to 97p, Sam needs to add another 2p which means using 5 coins.

  26. Miss Carruthers says:

Brilliant Catherine, I love how clearly you have explained your working out 🙂

  27. Dear Miss,

Sam would use a 50p, a 20p, another 20p and a 5p but he would only have 95p then so he needs to add another 2p to get 97p.

  28. Miss Carruthers says:

    A fantastic explanation – well done! ⭐

  29. I have done my maths and challenge. I enjoyed it.
