Good morning, Year 5!

Workbook: 5B

Chapter: 13 Volume

Lesson: 1 and 2 Finding the Volume of Solids

Volume is the amount of space a 3D shape takes up.

What is volume?

You can work out the volume of a shape by multiplying height × width × depth. If the shape is made of cubic cm blocks, you can count the cubes to find the shape’s volume.

The following images will explain how to find the volume.

Please click the images to enlarge:

Note: the result is in m3 (cubic metres) because we have multiplied metres together three times.

Watch this video on how to find the volume.

If you need support: It may help you to draw or make the shapes before you try it out!

Challenge:

Try these great problems to do with volume.

If you finish this activity and would like to learn more maths, please head over to our Home Learning page and scroll down to ‘Maths’ to find more websites you can enjoy.

Marking your answers

As you and your parents now have access to Maths No Problem, I will continue to set daily worksheets for you to complete at home. They may be worksheets that you may have already attempted in class but that’s okay! It’s important that you revise and practise your skills. More information about how to log in to Maths No Problem can be found here.

You do not need to print these worksheets out – you can simply using your yellow books to show your working out and write your answers. You or your parents can then mark it as you now have access to the answers

Therefore you will not be required to write your answer in the blog comments section as before. Please do comment if you need help or have any questions about the task. Also, please read each other’s comments and help each other out if you can! It is important we stay in touch and talk to each other about maths using mathematical language just like we did in the classroom 🙂

As today is not my usual working day, Miss Coleman & Miss Carruthers will kindly respond to the blogs for today.

Good luck!

Mrs Avdiu & Ms Robertson
