Good Morning, Nursery.

Yesterday, we were guessing how many objects would fit into a shoe!

Today, we are going to measure how many spoonfuls will fit into a bowl.

You will need; a small bowl (like a cereal bowl), a spoon, cereal or rice or small, dry pasta pieces.

Take a spoonful of  cereal, rice or pasta. Tip it into your bowl.

Then, each of you must estimate how many spoons you will need to fill the bowl.

Take a second spoonful and do the same again.

Keep going like this until the bowl is as full as it can be.

How many spoonfuls did your bowl hold?

Did anyone guess the right number?

Now try the activity again with another type of filling, e.g. rice.   (It should hold the same number of spoons!)

Have fun!  I am looking forward to hearing all about it.

Love from Miss Siswick. (I will be at school so I will not be able to respond until later today.)

PRINTABLE VERSION:N Maths Friday

It would really help me if you could upload photos  straight to the media file (instructions are here: sharing photos and files) as they get to me more quickly and easily as they don’t have to go via the office and my e-mail. Please can either your child’s name or face (but not both) be visible on any photos. Many thanks.

Hello Nursery. Today’s activity is much nicer than yesterday’s. My shoes made the Lego stinky! When I get home today I am going to have Cheerios for my tea and estimate how many spoonfuls it will take to fill the bowl. I am going to use my BIGGEST bowl. Yum yum.!

  2. Good morning Miss Siswick,

Nicolas guessed that he needs 5 table spoons to fill the bowl with pasta. We counted 7 spoons to fill the bowl. Now we tried it with rice. Nicolas loved this homework.

    Greetings from us

  3. Miss Siswick says:

Great guessing, Nicolas. Your guess was really close.

  4. Alexander says:

Good morning Miss Siswick and Nursery!

Alexander carried out this task with some beans… at the first attempt he guessed right with 12 spoonfuls… but wasn’t so lucky with other attempts with different size bowls… we will keep practising.

  5. Miss Siswick says:

Great guess, Alexander. Try measuring different things eg rice, sugar into the same bowl as, if you are measuring carefully, it should hold the same number of spoonfuls.

  6. We filled a bowl with beans Mum almost had the right guess.
    I was a bit below.
We had to count till 11.

  7. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, Leopold. Great estimating and counting. Can you try again with something else? It should still be 11 spoonfuls.

  8. James guestimated 68 spoons of ABC cereal would fill the bowl. He ate some while doing. He actually counted 12 spoons but I encouraged him to fill to the top and he counted 14 spoons to fill the bowl. We’ve sent photos.

He then asked me to guess how many ABC cereal s would fit in his tummy??

  9. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, James. How much cereal does fit in your tummy?

  10. Hello Miss Siswick ,

Caspian chose his favourite cereal and tried to estimate 2 times without success on the 3rd time he did estimated correctly 28 spoons.
He wrote the number down on a paper.

  11. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, Caspian. Great counting and writing.

  12. Hello Nursery
Unfortunately, today no one guessed correctly but we still had great fun.
    Ania measured rice and flakes.

  13. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, Ania. I am glad that you had fun measuring.

  14. Victoire says:

    Hello,

It takes 30 spoons to fill the bowl
No one guessed the right number of spoons!

  15. Miss Siswick says:

That is a lot of spoons, Victoire! Great counting.

  16. Dear Miss Carruthers,

Anna loved the homework. She counted 8 spoons to fill the cereal bowl. She was almost right.

  17. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, Anna. I am glad that you loved the Maths today.
