Good Morning, Nursery.

I hope you had fun making and ordering your number cards yesterday.

Go to yesterday’s Maths blog if you haven’t made number cards yet as you will need them for today’s activity.

Your child will need 5 pairs of socks in mixed colours  but please don’t tell them how many there are!

Today’s task:
Jumble up all of the socks.

Can you guess how many socks there are altogether?

Can you find the number card for your guess?

Can you count all of the socks?

Can you find the number card for the total?

Was it the same number?

Can you sort the socks into pairs?

Can you find the number card ?

Can you sort the socks out into two groups? It could be all the blue socks and all of the oher socks, for example.

Use your number cards to record how many socks are in each group.

How many ways can you find to sort the socks out into two different groups?

When you have finished, put all your socks back into pairs.

Can you fold them and put them away?

I am looking forward to hearing all about your Maths today.
Love from Miss Siswick.

PRINTABLE VERSION:N Maths Tuesday

It would really help me if you could upload photos  straight to the media file (instructions are here: sharing photos and files) as they get to me more quickly and easily as they don’t have to go via the office and my e-mail. Please can either your child’s name or face (but not both) be visible on any photos. Many thanks.

  1. Grace guessed that we had six socks initially and found the card. Then we counted 10 socks and she found that card too. She arranged them in two groups when we discussed that we could sort them into those with patterns and those with pictures. She found the correct number cards. Then we made more groups of those in bright and dull colours. After we took some of Eddie’s socks and muddled them up and Grace arranged them into her socks and Eddie’s. By then we had 10 pairs of socks and she counted them individually too. Finally we folded them in on themselves (she was good at this) and put them back in the drawers :))

Well done, Gabriel and Grace. Great sock counting and sorting.
I am very impressed that you put them all away, Grace. I hope Gabriel did too!

  3. James did very well. Bar picking one number card wrong, get got all right. Even to my surprise, he guessed there were 10 socks at the start. He sorted his pile into socks that had red on them and didn’t and counted 4 and 6 correctly.
He also told me there were 5 pairs of socks after he had put into pairs.
    Sending photos now

  4. Esmeralda says:

Esme loved counting and sorting socks.

She used number cards to say how many socks or pair she had.

She managed to sort out pairs into two groups as follows:
    4+1=5
    3+2=5

    She has’t folded them yet…

  5. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, James and Esme. It sounds as if you are confident with sorting and counting the socks. Now, try folding them and putting them away again!

  6. Dear Miss Siswick,

    Greeting

  7. Nancy Bear says:

This was a fun game for all of us – we played with 20 socks so it could include Philip’s sister. Sadly all players disbanded when it came to folding the socks! Mum being the only Marie Kondo fan in this household.

  8. Caspian did brilliant job . He counted separated and folded the socks ? very confidently .
    5+5=10
    7+3=10
    9+1=10
    He practiced writing number 10.

  9. Ania is more and more confident with numbers and she had a great time. Ania easily counted the socks and found the right number, she had fun changing the number of socks and finding the right numbers, sometimes she made mistakes when she was in a hurry
She managed sort out the pairs into two groups and found the numbers.
    2 + 8
    5 + 4
    9 + 1

Well done; Anna, Philip, Caspian, Ania and Sam. I am glad that you all had fun counting and sorting the socks and using the number cards.
For your next challenge-fold them all up in pairs and put them away neatly!

  12. Hello nursery,
Fiadh guessed 6 socks and found the 6 card, then counted the 10 socks correctly and found the 10 card. She put them in to 5 pairs and found the 5 card. She split the pairs in to a group of 3 and 2. and found these cards. Fiadh had so much fun with with the socks!

  13. Hi, Aoife enjoyed the sock game and was able to count them, pair socks together and sort them into different groups. She then counted the socks in each group and matched them to the corresponding number card.

  14. Leopold says:

Leopold managed to count 10 socks and found with a bit of help the card number.
He put the socks in pairs and found 5 pairs (counting) . He still needs to practice to recognise number. We are focusing on 0 to 5 for now.
He managed to group them in 3plus 2 that makes 5.

  16. Nicolas says:

    Hello Miss Siswick,

When I asked Nicolas how many socks he thinks are in the pile he said: one thousand, then he started counting them and said 10. He found the number 10, but insisted to count the numbers through. He realised though that the number 2 was still missing in our pile when just looking at the mixed up number cards. Nicolas counted the socks to 10 and put them correctly into pairs. Now he wandered off again… I need to try to finish this exercise (groups) another day (he is more interested in continuing playing at the bathroom sink with the hatchimals and cars today. I was running today between bathroom and kitchen where Sophia was doing her homework to ensure Nicolas did not set the bathroom under water ? ?). Many greetings from us!

  17. Adelaide says:

    Hello,

Adelaide counted ten socks and put them next to the number ten card. We folded the socks together and she counted 5 pairs. I then asked her to put her socks with some red or pink touch together and she rightly counted 6 socks and 3 pairs.

  18. Miss Siswick says:

Well done; Fiadh, Aoife, Leopold, Nicolas and Adelaide. There were lots of Maths skills to practice in this task and it sounds as if you have had good fun with all of them.
