Good Morning Year 2!
Click here for a printable version of this blog post: PE Thursday printable
Today we’re going to try some gymnastics! Obviously at school we would have the big hall to move in, so we’re going to have to be very careful doing these at home. Make sure you are in a good space and have an adult in the room watching to make sure you don’t hurt yourself.
Today we’re going to practise two skills: jumping and twisting. While you are doing it, try to notice how your body feels and then you can let us know in the comments below.
Jumps
To start, I want to you stand with your feet a little bit apart, bend your knees and then JUMP UP!
Try to land in the same spot that you started.
Make sure you bend your knees as you land.
Try it again, but this time, swing your arms up as you jump up. What did you notice? Did that make you jumper higher?
This time, we’re going to try to turn while we jump.
We need to use our Maths as we’re going to be jumping either a quarter turn (1/4), a half turn (1/2), a three-quarter turn (3/4) or a full turn.
To help orientate yourself, face a wall and see which wall you end up facing at the end of the jump. How far did you manage to turn?
This time, swing your arms to help you? Does this make you turn more or less?
Twists
Now we’re going to do some different twists. Do them slowly and see if you can describe how your body is feeling.
Lie on your tummy, bend knees so feet come up behind you, now push up on your hands and look over your shoulder at your feet. Can you feel the twist in the middle?
Which part of the body moved and which part stayed still?
Put your hands and feet on the floor, with your front facing the floor and take your hands for a walk around your feet. Keep your feet very still. Go as far as you can, twist and then walk back again. SLOWLY twist and untwist yourself
Start in the same position but this time, walk your feet around your hands. Remember that your hands have to stay still this time
Jump and Twist
Now it is time to join these two skills together. Jump to turn your body in the air (choose the amount of turn), land and sink down onto hands and feet to SLOWLY twist, hold it for three seconds and then SLOWLY untwist.
You can do this several times with different jumps and different twists. Which is your favourite? Which is the hardest, and why?
Twist stretch to end
Stand with your back to a wall and a very small step away from it. Keep your feet still and twist the top half of your body so that you can touch the wall with both hands. Do this on both sides.
Fantastic photos Madeleine! You looked like you had a fun time trying all the jumps and twists!
How did your body feel when you were twisting?
I did my gymnastics and messed my mum’s bed up.
Haha! I hope your mum didn’t mind! Which jump and twist was your favourite?
Dear miss Carruthers,
I like doing this blog because the exercises were so fun to do. I tried all the activities. My favorite one is when you jump a 3/4 turn! I can do it in clockwise and anti- clockwise turn!
I’m glad you enjoyed it so much Sophie!
Hi Sophia is going to do this later on when it’s a bit cooler – we will send pics x
Good idea – enjoy the sunshine!
Brilliant photos Romey! I can see you were using your arms carefully in your jump!
Brilliant stretches Nadine! Well done for doing a full turn!
Wow everyone, well done. I can see you will be super fit and ready for our PE lessons when we get back to school!
Hi Miss Carruthers , I did the exercises this morning in the garden?♀️?. It was fun ?.I think I jumped higher when I used my arms?.
