Good Morning Year 2!

Last week in RE, we looked at the story of the women finding that Jesus had risen from the dead. It was such a miracle and the disciples were so excited to have Jesus back with them on earth, but it wasn’t going to be forever.Jesus had to return to his Father in heaven but he promised that he would send someone to help them. The disciples were looking forward to the coming of the Holy Spirit and how the Spirit would help them to spread the Good News and serve others.
Watch this video to see the story of the Ascension:
Don’t forget to click pause at the end so that it doesn’t go onto another video.
Jesus’ disciples would have very mixed feelings. I imagine that they were really sad and confused that Jesus was leaving them again, they had only just got him back! But also, excited that Jesus was going back to heaven to be with God and that they would have a new friend to help them on Earth, the Holy Spirit.
Lots of artists have painted their own version of this story, showing the confusion on the disciples’ faces when Jesus goes up to heaven, before they realised what was happening! As well as the heavens opening up for Jesus to come in – I wonder what you think Heaven would look like? Have a look at these pictures below:
I would like you to make your own picture to show the Ascension.
You can choose whether you want to make it more real, showing all the disciples and the expression on their faces, or more abstract, showing the feelings using colours. Think about how you will show Heaven. What colours will you use? Will there be angels there?
Please send in your pictures and I will share them on the blog. You can explain your artwork in the comments below. e.g. In my painting I used bright colours for Heaven to show the goodness of God shining through. I made the disciples look amazed because they had never seen anything like this before.
Well done Kristian! I like how you have made heaven with bright colours and drawn all the shocked faces on the people watching him.
Well done Nadine for including a description of your artwork when you sent it in. Here it is for others to read:
Dear Miss Carruthers,
I did a collage of the ascension because all collages look beautiful, just as heaven is beautiful in the sky. I put a picture of Jesus in the middle because he is going up to heaven.
Great work Joshua! I love that bright yellow you chose to use.
Hello Miss I draw a picture the disciples having the flames on their heads to show that the holy spirit is with them.
The colours I used are green, dark blue, yellow, red, pink, orange, purple, black, brown and peach.
Well done Marisa. The Holy Spirit isn’t with them just yet (we’ll learn about Pentecost next week!) But Jesus does promise that the Holy Spirit will be with them soon.
I love all the colours you used!
In my painting, I used different light colours to show the peace and harmony that God brings to us. Jesus Christ is the King going back to heaven and the disciples were happy. They knew Jesus had to go back to God but the Holy Spirit was coming.
God really does bring us peace and harmony, and it is important that we remember that. Well done!
Well done Kristian, Nadine and Joshua. I love the way you have depicted the Ascension in different ways. I’ve always thought you are a very artistic class Year 2.
Well done Rex, I love how you have made Heaven with all the colours!
Well done Sophia B on your painting today – I love how you mixed the yellows and oranges to make heaven.
In my painting, I used bright colours as it shows the symbol of happiness. The light ness also shows heaven as a beautiful and wonderful place
I copied the one were it looked like Jesus is on fire. My mummy didn’t like it because she thought it was scary. I made the disciples look sad and shocked. I believe in angels so I drew them in heaven.
More wonderful depictions of the Ascension Year 2. I really am enjoying looking at these
