Good Morning, Reception.

I hope that you have had a lovely weekend.

Well done for your hard work in Maths last week. Today, we are going to practice halving. Halving means sharing amounts into 2 equal groups.

You need your number cards, two plates or bowls, two people and lots of food!

First get a plate or bowl for yourself and one for another person.

Take 2 items of food. Share the food, one piece at a time, so that each person has the same amount of food.

Each person now has half of 2. Can you find the number card for half of 2?

Now try it with 4 items of food.

Can you guess what half  of 4 will be? Share the food, one piece at a time, so that each person has the same amount of food. Each person now has half of 4. Can you find the number card for half of 4?

You can keep going with 6,  8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 pieces of food.

Maybe you could help to share out the food for your family at your next meal. Make sure everyone gets the same!

Challenge: Investigate what happens when you try to share 1, 3 or 5 items of food between 2 people?

I am looking forward to hearing all about your Maths today.

Love from Miss Siswick.

PRINTABLE VERSION:R Maths Monday

It would really help me if you could upload photos  straight to the media file (instructions are here: sharing photos and files) as they get to me more quickly and easily as they don’t have to go via the office and my e-mail. Please can either your child’s name or face (but not both) be visible on any photos. Many thanks.

  1. James is very good at halving up to 24.
Using his favourite food, cucumber, he worked out half of 3 and 5 then started to calculate halving all the odd numbers.

  2. Ms Pereira says:

Morning Reception! What an interesting Maths activity today. It sounds really fun. I look forward to hearing your answers.

  3. Hello Miss Siswick,
I did have a lovely weekend, I liked today’s maths, it was sometimes a bit difficult but halving 5 or 3 was easy for me.

  4. Ruby-Mae says:

Good morning, Ruby-Mae share some pretend food in two different plate with her sister. she find out that half of 2 is 1, half of 4 is 2,half of 6 is 3, half of 8 is 4 and half of 10 is 5. Ruby-Mae enjoy the activity.

  5. Ruby-Mae says:

Good morning,Ruby-Mae share the food into different plate for her and sister. She find out the half of2 is 1, the half of 4 is 2, the half of 6 is 3, the half of 8 is 4 the half of 10 is 5.

  6. Amber did the food sharing and half work fine.
The challenge did not go as smooth with 1, 3 and 5. I incorrectly started with 3 kit kats. I should have started with 1 apple as it became easier to think of cutting it in half. I’ll send photos

  7. Good morning Miss Siswick, Juliana enjoyed this activity, she investigated what happens when she tried to share 5 items and I have helped her cut an item in half.

  8. Good morning,
Sibylle was confident with halving today, I can see the difference with last time! She had fun sharing food and lots of things as well between her and her sister.
She wanted to use the scissors to share the last item when necessary, so we stopped the lesson 😉
She will help to share the food for lunch.

  9. Madeleine ? ? ? ? ? says:

    Good morning all,

It was fun and a bit of a struggle with today’s math when we tried to share 13.
We started with 2 fruits to share and so on until 10 but then we tried 13.
    What a headache ? !
Then we took all our cards one by one to figure out which one could be split in 2 or not. Then it was easier to figure out.
Then we worked a little bit on the counting 2 by 2.
And then it was time to eat one of those banana ? to recover for the very hardworking !

  10. We used raisins to do counting and halving. Rocco was confident doing this exercise and noticed the answers were going up by 1 each time.
For 1, 3 and 5 he noticed they could not be halved unless we cut one of the raisins in half.

  11. Good morning!
Theo was confident with halving today! Theo did really well!
He use his game instead of food!
    He found out that half of 20 is 10,half of 18 is 9, half of 16 is 8,half of 14 is 7,half of 10 is 5,half of 8 is 4,half of 6 is 3,half of 5 is 2,5!!

    We will sent photo soon!

  12. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, everyone, for your wonderful Maths this morning. You have all been working very hard on halving the numbers and I am glad that you are enjoying the activity.

I am very sorry that I am replying so late this morning as I was phoning people at home. Hopefully, I will get to talk to each of you in the next few days. Love from Miss Siswick.

  13. Good Morning Miss Siswick
Luca was fine halving and sharing up to 10 but found it a little tricky guessing 12-18. He was good at halving the odd numbers, telling me either someone is lucky and gets more or they have to cut one item in half to do it correctly.

  14. Ryan enjoyed doing this exercise thought it was a little challenging. He started by halving 3, 4, 6, 8, 10. We then looked at the numbers 3, 5 and 7 to investigate how they can be shared equally- Ryan thinks that the remaining 1 could be cut in half or just put to one side.

We then explored numbers up to 10 – Ryan identified which numbers were odd and which were even.

  15. I enjoyed this exercise a lot. I shared tomatoes ? between two characters of the series Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom (where you can find King Thistle).
We did up to 30 tomatoes ?. When we started to share 3, 5 and 7 tomatoes, I realised that I had one remaining. I had the idea ? to cut the tomatoes ? in 2.

  16. Miss Siswick says:

Well done. Luca, Rocco and Ryan. You all came up with ideas for how to find half of odd numbers such as 3,5,7.

  17. Marcus really enjoyed this, gathering and sharing all the food!
He was confident with halving the even numbers. With the odd numbers, he was less confident but got there in the end with 1, 3, 5 & 7. We’ve sent a couple of photos..

  18. chiara enjoyed maths today and understood the meaning of half by sharing fruits.she realised she couldnt share 3.5 and 7 like 2,4,6 and 8 and it is challenging for her to divide these numbers.
    pictures are sent

  19. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, Marcus and Chiara. Some numbers are trickier to halve/share by 2 than others.

  20. We decided to share lego pieces to two lego figures as it was easier for us. He shared up to 20 pieces.
When I asked him to share 5 though he initially gave 3 pieces to one and 2 to the other figure. So I asked him if the pieces were equally shared and he realized that they didn’t have the same amount of pieces and he told me he couldn’t half 5. I explained him he would be left with one. I then gave him 7 pieces and he gave three to each one of the figures and showed me the one left he couldn’t share.

  21. Philippa says:

We had a great time playing with the food and doing half.
Half of 2 is 1 and half of 4 is 2 (this was really easy for pippa).
We then did the rest putting one piece at a time on each plate.
    Half of 6 is 3
    Half of 8 is 4
    Half of 10 is 5
    Half of 12 is 6
    Half of 14 is 7
    Half of 16 is 8
    Half of 18 is 9
And half of 20 is 10.
We discover we can get half of 1, 3 or 5 unless we break on food in half.

  22. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, Nicolas and Philippa. You halved amounts all the way up to 20 and thought about way to halve the odd numbers like 1,3 and 5.

  23. Nancy Bear says:

Florence was able to half equal numbers, she was a bit confused with the odd numbers. She said “you can’t do it”

  24. Miss Siswick says:

Well done for halving the numbers, Florence. The amounts like 1,3 and 5 are very tricky to share. You’re right-you can’t share them equally unless you chop one of the objects in half with a knife.
