Good Morning, Reception.

Well done for working so hard with your Maths this week.

Today, we are going to do something a bit different.

Can you investigate how much water different bottles (or other containers) can hold?

It might be best to do this over the sink and put the water in the sink first. Hopefully this will be less messy and also save on water!

First, experiment with pouring different amounts of water in one bottle. Can you talk about how much water you have poured into each bottle?  Here are some words to help you:

Then, get three different sized bottles (or other containers) and one small cup.

Can you measure how many cops of water each bottle can hold?

You can do this two different ways;

Either fill the bottles up with water and then pour the water out, one cup at a time and count how many cups of water were in each bottle.

Or, use the cup to fill the bottles with water, one cup at a time, and count how many cups of water you needed.

How many cups full of water did each bottle hold?

Which bottle holds the most?

Which bottle holds the least?

Did any of the bottles hold the same amount of water as each other?

Nursery are learning about the Goldilocks story this week. You could try out this recipe to make porridge using cups to measure the ingredients:

I am looking forward to hearing all about your Maths today.

Love from Miss Siswick.

PRINTABLE VERSION:R Maths Thursday

It would really help me if you could upload photos  straight to the media file (instructions are here: sharing photos and files) as they get to me more quickly and easily as they don’t have to go via the office and my e-mail. Please can either your child’s name or face (but not both) be visible on any photos. Many thanks.

  1. Hello Miss,
Today’s maths was funny, I had to be very careful not to spill water everywhere. I could talk about the different amounts of water and then counted the cups of water.
My biggest bottle held 5 cups, my black one 4 cups and my unicorn one only 2.
I wish you a lovely day

  2. Good morning,
Sibylle enjoyed this activity. She measured with glasses, bottles and cups with confidence.
Some glasses have different shapes but they can hold the same quantity of water. It is not easy to guess without expermenting it.
We also talked about half-full and half-empty ?

  3. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, Sybille and Maya. It is not easy to guess how much water a container will hold but it is fun to measure!

  4. Amber selected 3 different bottle shapes with mummy’s help and 1 cup (American size).
She filled each one differently and labelled. We had Nearly full, Empty. Half-full and Full.
She also had lots of fun counting her cups of water when filling and often found that she only needed a half or a nearly full cup to fill the bottle. We are now going to make some porridge using our cup and keep for tomorrow am. Amber loves porridge daily.

  5. Good morning, we had a lot of fun measuring water !
The biggest bottle could hold 4 cups of water, the medium one could hold 3 cups of water, then the slightly smaller one could hold 2 cups and the smallest bottle held 1.5 cups of water.

None of the bottles could hold the same amount they were all very different !

The biggest bottle held the most and the smallest bottle held the least !

    James.

  6. Miss Siswick says:

Great measuring, Amber and James. I am glad that you enjoyed today’s task.

  7. Ms O'Connell says:

Hello reception..I know how much you enjoy water activities.. and cooking ..have fun!

  8. Good morning! Harlow measured 4 cups of water into a glass, 6 cups into a bottle and 10 cups into a jug. The jug held the most water and the glass held the least. We sent a picture too.

  9. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, Harlow. Great measuring and comparing.

  10. Ms Pereira says:

I love this activity! I am going to make porridge today. Have fun!

  11. I loved this exercise because I like playing with water ?. I started by pouring different level of water in the container. I told how much was inside: none=empty, up to the top=full, up to the middle=half-full, close to the top=nearly full, close to the bottom=nearly empty.
After I took one cup and poor water ? in the 3 containers. I filled 2.5 cups in the biggest container, 1.5 in the medium and 1 in the smallest.
I took a smaller cup and the result was different. I filled 7.5 cups in the biggest, 5.5 in the medium and 3 in the smallest.
I checked how many small cup of water ? was needed to fill the big cup. I needed almost 3 small cups to fill the big cup.
    I enjoyed the exercise !!!

  12. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, Cesar. You used lots of measuring and comparing language to talk about the task.

  13. I enjoyed doing this exercise because I like water. I filled bottles – 1 full, 1 nearly full, 1 half full and 1 nearly empty.

Then I got 3 different bottles and filled them by using a little jug – one of them filled up with nearly wrote jugs – the smallest only filled up with 1 jug of water and the middle size filled up with a jug and a half.

  14. Philippa says:

    Hello!
Perfect day to do math with water! We had a great time filling up the bottles!
We had 3 bottles, the biggest one held 7 and a half cups, the second one held 3 cups and the small one 2 cups.
Also we fill it up so we had a full, half, nearly empty and empty bottle. The hardest one for us it the nearly empty one, we did mostly a third. But we will keep trying while the sun is out and is nice weather.
    We sent you a picture!

  15. Hi, Marcus really enjoyed this task.
He was able to fill the bottles with different amounts as requested. He also managed 1 quarter and 3 quarters full.
When we did the experiment with different bottles, the number of cups needed to fill 2 of the bottles seemed to be the same. So we decided to get a better result using the measuring jug. Marcus learned that it’s not always obvious what holds the most volume as it depends how “fat” (wide) the bottle is not just how tall! We sent a couple of pictures…

  16. Miss Siswick says:

Well done; Ryan, Philippa and Marcus. Great measuring and comparing and I am glad that you enjoyed it.

  17. chiara poured 2 cups in the number 1 bottle, 8 cups in the number 2 and 10 cups in the number 3.
we practised the words full and empty.
    Fun exercise today.
    picture sent

  18. Miss Siswick says:

I am glad that you enjoyed measuring the water, Chiara.

  19. Hi Rocco filled 3 different size bottles up with water and emptied them using cups to measure how much water was in each .
The big held 6 cups of water, the medium held 2 cups and the small held just one cup.
We also filled a bottle with different amounts of water to show it could be empty, half empty etc.
We didn’t have porridge oats sorry ?
