Good Morning, Reception.

Well done for all of your hard work in Maths yesterday.

Today, we are going to be focussing on shapes.

Look at the photos of 2d (flat) and 3d (solid) shapes in the environment. Which shapes can you see? Use the shapes word mat to help you to use the names of the shapes.

Go on a shape hunt around your home and find as many shapes as you can.

Can you talk about the shapes that you have found?

What are the shapes called?

Are they 2d (flat) or 3d (solid) shapes?

Which shape did you find the most?

Were there any shapes that you couldn’t find at all?

I am looking forward to hearing how you got on.
Love from Miss Siswick.

PRINTABLE VERSION:R Maths Thursday

It would really help me if you could upload photos  straight to the media file (instructions are here: sharing photos and files) as they get to me more quickly and easily as they don’t have to go via the office and my e-mail. Please can either your child’s name or face (but not both) be visible on any photos. Many thanks.

  1. There are a cylinder, a cuboid, a sphere, a cube. These shapes are 3d.
I saw many spheres but I couldn’t find any pyramids and pentagon

  2. Miss Siswick says:

    Well done, Maya.

  3. James discovered new 3D shapes – cuboid, sphere, cylinder. We mostly found cuboids, cylinders, spheres.
New 2D shapes were oblong rather than rectangle. We didn’t find any heptagons, pentagons, octagons or hexagons.

  4. Miss Siswick says:

    Well done, James.

  5. The big wheel was a big circle with lots of triangles inside
The house had circles , triangles and oblongs
The 3 cones were joined with a triangle
    The wall looks like cuboids
The football is a sphere – it sounds like my sisters name
    The candle is a cylinder
The bean tin is a cylinder too
The road sign is a triangle with a circle
Pyramids – my daddy has been inside them
    The dice are cubes
    The building are cuboids
We have lots of balloons in our house because it is mummy’s birthday today – they are like spheres
    The fridge is a cuboid
We have lots of boxes to store our toys – they are cuboids
The toilet roll is a cylinder
The clothes hangers look like triangles
We could not find any pentagons , hexagons or octagons

  6. Miss Siswick says:

    Well done, Rocco.

  7. Hello Miss! I found 3D shapes: cuboid, cube, sphere, triangular prism and a cylinder and 2D shapes: many rectangles, circle and squares.

  8. Miss Siswick says:

    Well done, Cesar.

  9. Ryan identified the photos with 2D shapes circle, triangle and rectangle (oblong) as well as 3D shapes including a sphere, 2 cylinders, cube, cuboid, cones and pyramids.

He found many shapes which included cuboid, cubes, cylinders, spheres and cones.

  10. Miss Siswick says:

    Well done, Ryan.

  11. Hi, Marcus loved finding the different shapes around the house. He mostly found cuboids. He couldn’t find any triangles or pyramids. We weren’t sure what to call some 3D shapes (3D hearts, pentagon, hexagon) but decided on prisms!
    We sent a photo..

  12. Miss Siswick says:

Well done, Marcus. I think that they would be called e.g. hexagonal prisms etc. I need to brush up on some tricky 3D shape knowledge!

  13. Good afternoon!
The big wheel is a circle
In the house, I can see circles, triangles
The 3 cones look like a triangle
The wall of bricks looks like a rectangle
The football ball is a sphere
    The candle is a cylinder
The road sign is a triangle
The can of beans is a cylinder too
    The building are cuboids
    The pyramids are triangles
    The dice are cubes

The shapes what I’ve found are my toys :
wooden dice looks like a square
fire track looks like cylinder and rectangle
the card looks like a rectangle
box of colouring pencils looks like a cylinder
lego block looks like square and little cylinder

  14. Miss Siswick says:

    Well done, Theo.

  15. Amber (with James’ help) found cylinders, spheres, cubes, oblongs, rectangles, triangles and squares

She found a cone after asking me where a toy was whose hat we could use.
She knew the difference between 2D and 3D bar the tissue box, which I would say is an oblong shape. Hope this is right.

  16. Miss Siswick says:

    Well done, Amber and James.

  17. oops sorry meant to say cuboid not oblong.

  18. Miss Siswick says:

I think it is a cuboid too.

  19. Hi Miss Siswick, Juliana found in her toys a sphere, cube, cone and cuboid.

  20. Miss Siswick says:

    Well done, Juliana.

  21. We found lots of shapes around our home. Most of the shapes are 3D. The shape I found most was a cylinder and the most unusual shape I found was a hexagon. I couldn’t find a pentagon, heptagon or octagon!

  22. Miss Siswick says:

    Well done, Luca.
