Good Morning, Reception.
I hope you had fun making and ordering your number cards yesterday.
Go to yesterday’s Maths blog if you haven’t made number cards yet as you will need them for today’s activity.
Your child will need 10 pairs of socks in mixed colours but please don’t tell them how many there are!
Today’s task:
Jumble up all of the socks.
Put your number cards in order.
Can you estimate (guess) how many socks there are altogether and find the number card for your estimate?
Can you count all of the socks and find the number card for the total?
Was it the same number?
Can you estimate (guess) how many pairs of socks there are altogether and find the number card for your estimate?
Can you sort the socks into pairs and find the number card for the total?
How many pairs of socks are there?
How many children could wear a pair of socks at the same time?
Challenge: Can you count the socks in 2’s like this; 2,4,6…?
Can you sort the socks out into two groups? It could be all the blue socks and all of the other socks, for example.
Use your number cards to record the number sentence. For example, 8 socks and 12 socks makes 20 socks.
How many pairs of socks are there in each group?
How many ways can you find to sort the socks out into two different groups? Use your number cards to record the number sentences.
When you have finished, put all your socks back into pairs. Can you fold them and put them away?
I am looking forward to hearing all about your Maths today.
Love from Miss Siswick.
PRINTABLE VERSION:R Maths Tuesday
Good Morning Miss Siswick,
Maya first guessed there were 30 socks but then counted 20.
Maya first estimated there were 12 pairs of socks but when she counted she found 10.
10 children can wear socks at the same time.
Maya had two groups, one of 14 socks and one of 6, so a group of 7 pairs and a group of 3 pairs.
She also found 2+18, 10+10 and 4+16
Well done, Maya. Great estimating and counting. You found lots of ways to group the socks as well.
Guess 23 socks
5 pairs of socks, so 10 socks total.
Amber sorted the socks into “boy socks” and “girl socks”
We laid ambers number cards out and counted in 2 up to 100, amber did to 20 by herself
Well done, Amber. Great counting in 2s as well.
Can you try the activity again with 10 pairs of socks?
Have fun estimating and counting.?
Good morning,
Today math was interesting and hard at the same time.
I guessed 10 socks and I had in fact 12. Not the same number.
I could sort all of them by pair and guessed there were 6 of them.
I could count 2 by 2 but after 6 I had to focus real hard not to say 7.
It took me longer to figure out for how many children it could be. I had to put them back by pair and figure out each pair would be a child.
So then 6 again.
Phew ? not easy this morning ?
Well done, Madeleine. The counting in 2s is a challenging question. Can you try the activity again with 10 pairs of socks?
Theo said he has 5 pair of socks.
He has 10 socks altogether.
We will send a photo of Theo work.
Well done, Theo. Can you try the activity again with 10 pairs of socks?
Florence enjoyed playing this game with her little brother, helping him with the numbers over 10. Although it turns out he’s a much better estimator than she is which caused a little friction!!!
I’m glad that you and Philip had fun with the sock Maths, Florence. I am sure that there are lots of other things that you find easier than he does!
Well done for being so dedicated and hardworking.
Good afternoon
Ryan guessed the correct number of 20 (he didn’t have time to count them) then counted 20. He guessed 13 pairs and counted 10. Understanding what a pair is was more challenging however with a little practice he was able to count in 2s to 20
We sorted the socks in categories and Ryan did 3 sums equal to 20. He counted the pairs in each group.
12 + 8
6 + 14
16+4
Well done, Ryan. You found lots of different ways to sort the socks.
Hi, Marcus enjoyed this challenge. He estimated 30 at first till I said it had to one of his number cards then changed to 20!
He guessed the pairs as 10 and could do the sum when sorted into 2 piles. He was able to write out the sums for all the ways you can make 2 groups of socks (when I suggested the number in one of the group in each case). He has yet to tidy the socks away in his drawer!
We sent a couple of photos..
Well done, Marcus. I am looking forward to seeing the photos but I am having some technical problems at the moment!
Harlow guessed 10 socks (there were 20). She was able to count by 2 up to 20 after a little practice. She sorted her socks into nighttime socks and daytime socks and counted 16 + 4 = 20. This was a bit challenging for us!
James guessed it was 12 socks as he’s seen 6 pairs of legs and knows his doubles up to 20.
We played with socks and he guessed it right, we had 12 pairs and a total of 24 socks.
We counted by 2 up to 112 and then back from 112 to 0.
Good afternoon
Chiara first estimated 10 socks but then counted 20.After she estimated there were 2 pairs of socks but when she counted she found 10.
She understood that 10 children can wear 10 pairs of socks at the same time.
It is still challenging for her to count 2,4,6 and can only do it with the cards or with her fingers until 10.
Well done; Harlow, James and Chiara. There were lots of different Maths skills in this task and it sounds as if you all had a good try of all of them.
Luca estimated correctly that there were 20 socks which would mean there are 10 pairs of socks.
He did well counting in 2’s today and he made two groups of socks (navy blue and everything else). We will send you a picture of his sum.
Well done, Luca. Your number sentences are very clearly written.
This homework was a little bit confusing for Philippa. She had fun sorting them out and guessing how many.
Rosa was able to make an exact estimation (lucky girl!). She showed more confidence identifying numbers 0-20 today. She can count in twos and demonstrated her method by verbally counting in two as she moved along the x2 number sequence. An example of her work has been sent to upload.
