Good Morning, Reception.
Well done for all of your hard work in Maths yesterday.
Today, we are going to practice finding the difference between amounts.
You need water and ten objects or toys that you are allowed to get wet!
Look at the objects. Sort them into two groups; the ones that you think will sink and the ones that you think will float. How many are in each group? Does one group have more? How many more? Write down the numbers or use your number cards.
Ask a grown up to guess which objects that they think will sink and the ones that they think will float. How many are in each group? Does one group have more? How many more? Write down the numbers or use your number cards.
Now, put your objects in the water and have fun finding out which ones float and which ones sink.
Then, sort the objects into two groups; the ones that sank and the ones that floated. How many are in each group? Does one group have more? How many more? Write down the numbers or use your number cards.
You can try this as many times as you like with different objects and different amounts of objects.
Have fun! I am looking forward to hearing how you got on.
Love from Miss Siswick.
PRINTABLE VERSION:R Maths Wednesday
Good morning! Sibylle enjoyed this activity.
She sorted the objects and thought 5 will float and 5 will sink. Finally she made 3 mistakes and 4 sank and 6 floated. Then she enjoyed playing with the water … ? ?
Well done, Sybille. It is a lovely day for playing with water here in London. I hope you are having lovely weather too.
Good morning miss,
I have done my maths this morning and sent you my work
Well done, Maya. You had Philippine worked out how many more in each group.
We did addition and subtraction of numbers up to 20 instead of splashing in water. Oops…
Daddy
Well done, James. Maybe you can try the floating and sinking activity later.
Good morning Miss,
I enjoyed doing this exercise. I love playing with water ?!!!
I used 17 objects:
10 toys
1 tea spoon
1 bottle cork
1 apple ?
2 tomatoes ? ?, one small and one big
1 stone
1 marble
The result was:
9 sank – 6 toys, the tea spoon, the marble and the small tomato
7 floated – the apple, the cork and 5 toys.
I am not sure for the big tomato which was like a submarine.
Well done, Cesar. Did you find out how many more sank than floated?
We were very surprised to find that big/heavy things could float and small/light things would sink.
Great investigating, Florence.
Good afternoon!
Theo has 5 toys altogether
Theo made groups of the toys
float:4
sink:1
group of floating toys has more toys
Theo had a lot of fun!
Will send photo soon
Well done, Theo.
HI, Marcus loved this task and made us do it multiple times with different objects!
On the first try he thought 7 things would float and 3 would sink but actually 9 floated and 1 sank!
Like Florence, he was surprised that some heavy things actually floated, including an apple! On a later try, a post-it note floated and then sank!
We wish we had a big paddling pool like Rocco!
We sent some photos..
Well done, Marcus. I think we would all like to play in a paddling pool today!
Hello mis Siswick!
We had 5 things we though would sink and 5 that we though would float. The same amount! My mummy though 6 would float and 4 would sink. Mummy choose more for floating, 2 more!
We put the things in the water and 6 sank and 4 floated! 2 more sank. We had such a good time, perfect day for us to play with water.
I am glad that you both enjoyed it, Philippa. Well done.
Melchior enjoyed this activity a lot. Some of the objects floated but only because they were propped by air bubbles trapped beneath.
In the end fewer items floated than Melchior thought. We counted them.
I am glad that you enjoyed it, Melchior. Well done.
Sorry Miss for my late answer.
9 sank and 7 floated. 2 more sank than floated.
Well done, Cesar.
